Dolphins QB Josh McCown has decided to quit using chain saws, which should please his team. A brush with a chain saw two weeks ago left McCown with a cut on the index finger of his throwing hand that required six stitches. But he expects to be ready for the start of training camp next week, said his agent, Mike McCartney. "He has been throwing the football, and he's even playing golf," McCartney said. "He's fine." The accident occurred at McCown's home in Jacksonville, Texas, while he and his brother, Tampa Bay QB Luke McCown, were cutting a tree stump. McCown pledged to stay away from chain saws once he arrives in South Florida this week, McCartney said. The Dolphins open camp July 26. The new Bill Parcells regime signed McCown to a $6.25 million, two-year contract in February. He'll bid to become the 13th starting quarterback for Miami since Dan Marino retired following the 1999 season. McCown will compete with holdover John Beck and rookie Chad Henne. Last year McCown started nine games for the Oakland Raiders, throwing for 10 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. (Updated 07/16/2008)
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that even though Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown says his surgically repaired right knee feels strong, the team is going to be cautious with him during training camp in his return from last year's torn ACL. The paper reports that coach Tony Sparano said on his weekly radio show on WQAM (560-AM) that the team will "sprinkle" Brown into contact work during training camp, which opens Saturday. The Miami Dolphins resigned safety Yeremiah Bell to a one-year contract Monday. Bell, who turned 30 Monday, is entering his fifth NFL season after the Dolphins made him a sixth-round draft choice in 2003. In his previous four campaigns, he has played in 46 games, including 12 starts. During that time, the 6-0, 200-pounder has totaled 96 tackles, five sacks, an interception, three fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles. He was limited to one game last year after sustaining a ruptured left Achilles tendon in the season-opener at Washington on September 9. He turned in the best season of his career in 2006 when he started 11 of the 16 games in which he played and recorded 65 tackles, two sacks, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder crashed his pickup truck into a tree alongside Florida's Turnpike on Wednesday and left the scene of the early morning collision, authorities said. Crowder, 24, said he lost control of his 2007 Dodge truck on an exit ramp at about 5:30 a.m., then found a ride to his Davie home, according to a statement from the Florida Highway Patrol. Crowder was cited for careless driving and leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage - a second-degree misdemeanor. It was not immediately known if he had an attorney. "He's fine. We have reached out to him, I think he's fine," Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland said on a video posted on the team's Web site. (Updated 01/23/2008)
