Two-time Pro Bowl linebacker DeMarcus Ware sat out Dallas Cowboys practice Thursday, a day after leaving the field early following a hit to the head. The Dallas Morning News said Ware suffered a concussion. Ware was on the field, but not in uniform, for the team's only practice of the day. At the end of Wednesday morning's practice, Ware left the field early with a trainer while the rest the team gathered for its post-session stretch. Coach Wade Phillips said that Ware was feeling "dizzy a little bit" after getting "dinged in the head." (Updated 07/31/2008)
According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Wednesday he thinks the latest the team will know Adam Jones' status for Week 1 is Aug. 30 when the team must reduce its roster to 53 players. Jones, however, will likely not start against San Diego in the Cowboys preseason opener Saturday night. Despite Terence Newman being out with an injury, Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said he expects rookie Mike Jenkins to start at left cornerback. Adam Jones has been on the other side. "Adam is going to play, because he practiced well," Phillips said. "I think he'll show some of the same things. I think more of it is learning what we need to do, what techniques we want, what the coverages are and so forth. But I think he'll do all right, because he's a really gifted player." While he's been on the field in some form or fashion, cornerback Terence Newman hasn't practiced much at all in the preseason. But, reports the team's official Web site, Newman, a guest Wednesday on the "Lunch Break" Internet radio show, talked about his training camp, which included a groin injury just three days into workouts that has kept him out of practices ever since. The Pro Bowl cornerback said while he won't be practicing any more here in Oxnard before the team breaks camp next Tuesday, that's not the case for the preseason games. "Yeah, I'll play in the preseason," Newman said. "I can't tell you which one, but I promise I'll be out there." Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips has already ruled Newman out for Saturday night's game in San Diego, and it's highly unlikely he would return the following week in Denver. But the Aug. 22 home game with Houston could be a possibility, considering most teams usually use the third preseason game as a dress rehearsal to the regular season and typically play the first-teamers for about a half. While Newman said he wants to play in the preseason, it doesn't appear he will be too disappointed if he doesn't make it, or is held out. In fact, the five-year veteran said missing the practices here in training camp and preseason won't affect him too much for the start of the regular season. "To me, training camp is overrated," Newman said. "I have no problem with it. I wish I wouldn't have gotten hurt. But, I came back last year and was able to be a little bit fresher than some of the other guys. I think it was a blessing in disguise." (Updated 08/07/2008)
