Q. Who's going to be QB?
A. Still is to be determined. Chad Pennington has the experienceand savvy, while Kellen Clemens has the arm and upside. Penningtonseems to be the best choice to lead a win-now team that is ladenwith free agents, but Eric Mangini could opt for Clemens. The Jetspassed on a QB in the early rounds, but rookie fifth-rounder Erik Ainge could develop into a viable alternative. Ainge doesn't possessa huge arm, but can read defenses well and projects as an NFL-caliber game manager. Sounds a lot like one of the guys ahead of himon the depth chart.
Q. With Dustin Keller aboard now, what's next for Chris Baker?
A. General manager Mike Tannenbaum indicated Saturday the teamdoesn't intend to trade Baker. The unhappy tight end is scheduled tomake $683,000 this season, while free-agent signee Bubba Franks isbelieved to be making $1.65 million as a backup and Purdue's Kelleralso likely will make more money as a late first-round draft choice.
Q. Can OLB Vernon Gholston and/or CB Dwight Lowery earn astarting job this season?
A. The dynamic Gholston certainly has a chance to beat out Bryan Thomas for a starting spot. If not, he likely will be a situationalperformer this season and a starter by 2009. It wouldn't besurprising to see Lowery, a fourth-round pick, starting by the endof the season.
