Reid expects Westbrook in camp: On Day 1 of his 10th training camp at Lehigh University, Eagles coach Andy Reid was asked if he thinks RB Brian Westbrook will show up Thursday when veterans are due to report. "I'm sure he would," Reid said in phillyblurbs.com. "Brian is obviously one of the leaders of the football team, so I would expect that he would be here." If Westbrook does hold out, it could be a costly decision. Westbrook, who signed a five-year, $23.2 million contract extension near the end of the 2005 season, is due $3 million this year, $3.5 million next year and $4.5 million next year. If he's a no-show, Westbrook will be subject not only to daily fines such as the ones that cost him $42,000 when he held out in the summer of 2005 the Eagles could also go after a portion of his signing bonus, according to the way his contract is written. Fantasy Analysis
Westbrook, who turns 29 on Sept. 2, set a franchise record with 2,104 total yards of offense last year and is generally considered the best running back in team history. Last year he went to his second Pro Bowl and was named to the AP All-Pro team. In the last four years, Westbrook has 3,979 rushing yards, a 4.7 rushing average and 301 catches for 2,789 yards. He has scored 50 career touchdowns. Keep an eye on what Westbrook does this offseason, but go into 2008 with Westbrook as a No. 1 Fantasy option and a Top 5 pick in all leagues this season. RB Brian Westbrook, who is due just $3 million in base salary and a $1.5 million roster bonus this season, wants a new deal. "We've always done a good job with those things, so I'm not worried about that," coach Andy Reid said. "We've always been very fair and understanding to the players that we've approached about contracts. Other than that, I'm not going to get into that. It's not our policy to get into these things, so I'll leave it at that." 07/22/2008
