Overview

Even though Terrell had a breakout season at cornerback in 2007, professional teams are also examining him as a wide receiver, feeling that he has the natural hands and burst to compete at the next level at that position. At a recent Pro Day workout, he looked like a natural, as he ran routes and caught every pass.

Scouts even worked one-on-one with him in agility drills that involved him sprinting forward and backward before adjusting his stance to catch a pass. "I was actually surprised they asked me to do receiving drills, but it was all good," Terrell said. "It felt natural. I don't mind being a receiver at all."

With his combination of size and quickness, Terrell excelled at closing on plays in front of him as a senior. He shows the ball skills, elevation and timing to catch the ball with ease. Moving to wide receiver is a daunting task, but the talented cornerback has experience playing there, from his high school and junior college days.

At Eureka High School, Terrell was regarded by many analysts to be the top high school prospect in the state of Missouri in 2003. He earned first-team All-State honors as a defensive back, but also garnered All-Conference and All-Metro accolades as a running back, wide receiver and all-purpose back. He had 1,153 yards rushing and more than 400 yards receiving as a senior. He was limited to 24 tackles that year, as opposing offenses rarely came his way.

In 2003, Terrell showed his explosiveness in the Class 4A championship game, when he scored on a 59-yard run on the first play from scrimmage to put Eureka up 7-0 over Kearney, before Kearney rallied for a 36-22 win. During his junior season, he rushed for 960 yards and added more than 200 yards receiving. He played on Eureka teams that went 25-3 from 2000-02, as the squad won district titles in 2000 and 2002, conference championships in 2001 and 2002, and went 12-2 and was a Show-Me Bowl runner-up in 2002.

Terrell was also a four-year letterman in track. He placed fifth at the state championships in 2002 at 200 meters (21.8) and ran on a 400-meter relay team which broke a school record (42.19).

Upon graduation, Terrell enrolled at Missouri, choosing the university over scholarship offers from Kansas State, Iowa, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Illinois. But, he failed to qualify academically and was urged by the Tigers staff to transfer to Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College.

Terrell red-shirted at Coffeyville in 2003, taking over free safety duties the following season, where he teamed with All-American Reggie Nelson (Jacksonville) in the defensive backfield. In 10 games, he recorded 45 tackles (23 solos) with two forced fumbles and an interception. He saw brief action as a receiver, catching three passes for 62 yards (20.7 avg) and a touchdown, scoring again on a blocked field goal, but also missed two games with a left shoulder separation.

Terrell returned to Missouri in 2005. Wearing jersey No. 11, he played in 12 games as a reserve cornerback. He finished his first season with the Tigers totaling 13 tackles (5 solos) with two interceptions and three pass break-ups.

Terrell and receiver Will Franklin wore jersey No. 3 in 2006 before Franklin switched to No. 2 in 2007. As a junior, he started all year at weak-side cornerback, posting 70 tackles (48 solos) with three stops for losses and caused a pair of fumbles. He broke up nine passes and intercepted another, earning All-Big 12 Conference honorable mention from the league's coaches.

As a senior, Terrell shifted to strong-side cornerback, starting 11 of 14 games. He totaled 41 tackles (31 solos) with three fumble recoveries and 11 deflected passes, as he also assisted in a stop behind the line of scrimmage.

In 39 games at Missouri, Terrell started 24 contests. He produced 124 tackles (84 solos) with 3.5 stops for losses of 23 yards and one quarterback pressure. He recovered three fumbles and caused two others. He led the active Tigers with 23 pass deflections and gained 25 yards on three interception returns.

Analysis

Positives: Has a lean, yet solid frame with long limbs, tapered upper body muscles, adequate bubble, tight abdomen, developed legs and minimal body fat (5.9%) … Has the sudden closing burst and range to instantly close on plays in front of him and could make a better safety prospect, as he attacks the ball better when facing the action than when having to trail the receiver with his back towards the ball … Has the foot speed to close ground in a hurry and is good at getting depth on his pass drops (just struggles when having to turn out of his breaks) … Long strider with the second gear to get back on the route when beaten … shows good movement skills working in space for a big cornerback … Will get run over at times due to strength issues, but will not hesitate to come up in the box to support vs. the run … Won't shy away from contact and gives total effort until the whistle … Not really vocal, but leads by example … Compensates for adequate strength with the recovery speed, leaping ability and timing to go up and over the receiver to break up the pass without getting caught … Better playing in the Cover-2 zone, as he seems to have a better feel for action that he can see in front of him … Gets involved with disrupting screens and underneath action and his feel for short area action is evident by his ability to cover ground in a hurry along the sidelines … With his burst and long stride, he has had good success in running down targets from behind … Lacks strength in run force, but will never shy away from getting involved in those plays … Closes with good urgency, but needs to improve his hip rotation in order to change direction better … Has the height and timing to compete for jump balls (hands are suspect, though, as he turns more than a few interception opportunities into pass deflections, especially when the ball sails through his hands) … Needs to face up more, but is an efficient body block tackler who stays low in his pads to stop the ballcarrier's forward progress until help arrives … Showed in 2007 much better hand placement and punch in attempts to reroute the receiver.

Negatives: Has a lean-looking frame and needs to add more bulk (especially strength) in order to become a more impact player vs. the run … Little stiff coming out of his breaks, as he appears too tight in his hips to plant-and-drive with a good burst … Bit high cut and this causes him to get too tall in his stance when backpedaling (will take false steps) and then struggles to keep his feet and maintain balance when he has to redirect suddenly … Has the size to take on the lead blocker in run support, but needs to be more physical with his hands when shedding blocks … Decent wrap-up tackler, but puts little power behind his hits to impact the ballcarrier's forward progress … Has the speed and large, soft hands to play receiver, but has a verified vision problem that causes him to struggle locating the deep throws (needs to wear contacts, but does not like to during games and this causes him to have vision issues) … Will struggle with a complicated playbook and needs additional reps to retain plays (has a verified learning disability and is enrolled in the school's program to help with that issue) … Despite his size, he is more of a finesse type of tackler, but this sees the bigger backs have success breaking his arm tackles … Stumbles too much in transition due to balance issues, narrow base and tight hips, especially when coming out of his breaks (benched briefly in 2007 due to this) … Loses sight of the ball on deep routes and while he has soft hands, is a marginal pass thief due to his inability to look the ball in … Will make plays vs. action in front of him, but struggles to locate the pass with his back to the quarterback … Times his leaps well, but unless he is facing the ball, he is not going to be able to track the pass in flight … Because of his quickness, he was tried as a kickoff returner, but due to vision issues, he muffed handling quite a few attempts and the staff thought it best to never use him in that capacity again … Those vision issues could explain why he is not able to avoid blockers on the move (gets cut often) or shed blocks once an opponent gets into his jersey … Low drag-down type of tackler who puts little force behind his hits … Will bite on the receiver's double moves and gets caught out of position when he eyeballs the quarterback for too long.

Compares To: CHRIS GAMBLE-Carolina … Like Gamble, scouts have seemed to have fallen in love with Terrell's athletic ability and quickness, overlooking his lack of strength, tight hips and obvious vision issues. Some teams are looking at possibly moving him to receiver, but while he can make plays on the ball when facing the action, he struggles to track the ball from behind. He should be much more physical with his tackling than he is, considering his size. He needs more than a few reps to retain plays and while he might give good value in a sub package, if you are a receiver who knows his physical deficiencies, you're salivating at the thought of going one-on-one vs. him in the open field.

High School, playing football for head coach Farrell Shelton … Regarded by many analysts to be the top high school prospect in the state of Missouri in 2003 … Earned first-team All-State honors as a defensive back, but also garnered All-Conference and All-Metro accolades as a running back, wide receiver and all-purpose back … Had 1,153 yards rushing and more than 400 yards receiving as a senior … Was limited to 24 tackles that year, as opposing offenses rarely came his way … In 2003, Terrell showed his explosiveness in the Class 4A championship game, when he scored on a 59-yard run on the first play from scrimmage to put Eureka up 7-0 over Kearney, before Kearney rallied for a 36-22 win … During his junior season, he rushed for 960 yards and added more than 200 yards receiving … Played on Eureka teams that went 25-3 from 2000-02, as the squad won district titles in 2000 and 2002, conference championships in 2001 and 2002, and went 12-2 and was a Show-Me Bowl runner-up in 2002 … Also a four-year letterman in track … Placed fifth at the state championships in 2002 at 200 meters (21.8) and ran on a 400-meter relay team which broke a school record (42.19).
