Culbertson, who is nicknamed Shaggy for his resemblance to the "Scooby-Doo" character, joined the Cyclones program as a walk-on. After sharing place-kicking duties during his first two seasons with the Cyclones, he took over those chores full-time his last two campaigns.
He finished his career as the school's sixth-ranked scorer with 214 points. Culbertson also etched his name into the ISU football lure by connecting on a game-record five field goals vs. Iowa in 2007. A model of consistency, he set another Cyclone record by making all 100 extra-point attempts during his career.
Culbertson lettered three times as the place-kicker at Lincoln High School, earning first-team All-Conference honors as a senior. He hit all 19 PAT attempts and made five field goals, including a long of 52. The 52-yarder tied for the season-long in Iowa, and was a conference record. He also lettered three times in soccer.
After joining the team in 2004, the walk-on kicked in seven games, ranking second on the team with 40 points. He made all 16 PATs tries and hit on 8-of-10 field goals. He also kicked off 30 times for a 56.9-yard distance average.
In 2005, he was one of three players to handle place-kicking duties, finishing with a career-high 70 points, nailing all 34 extra-point attempts while making 12-of-16 field goals. He had a long field goal of 45 yards, but did not handle kickoff chores.
As a junior, he registered 48 points in 12 games. He was successful on 8-of-11 field goals and all 24 PAT attempts. He was not assigned to handle kickoff chores and had a season-long 52-yard three-pointer.
In 2007, Culbertson split kickoff chores, as he averaged a distance of 53.6 yards on 28 attempts. He scored 56 points on all 25 extra-point tries and 8-of-11 field goals, with a long of 42 yards. He also recorded a solo tackle.
In 41 games at Iowa State, Culbertson finished sixth in school history in scoring with 214 points. He hit on 38-of-55 field goals (69.1 percent) and all 100 PAT attempts. He connected on 7-of-17 field goals from 40 yards or longer and had one solo tackle.
