Overview
Massive man whose size and upper body strength make him an imposing drive blocker, but with only marginal foot quickness and balance Schwartz is a liability in pass protection. He struggled with a back injury throughout his junior season but his play improved when healthy as a senior. However, struggles throughout the week of practice at the East-West Shrine Game and during the game will push him down the board.
Analysis
Positives: Massive man who, despite his 335 pounds, isn't soft around the middle. Big hands and long arms. Flashes an impressive initial hand punch and when he delivers on it, can drive his opponent yards down the field. Significantly more effective as a senior after struggling through a back injury his junior season.
Negatives: Lacks quickness in nearly every phase of the game. Struggles to keep up with quick edge rushers and will over-compensate to the outside, making him especially vulnerable to spins back inside. Adequate balance and flexibility. Relies on his size and hand play to control the defender and struggles to recover if beaten initially. Lacks the foot quickness to block effectively on the move. Struggled mightily at times during the week of practice and the East-West Shrine Game, itself.
High School
High School (Coach): Palisades Charter (Jason Blatt) 2004. Rated among the top 75 prep prospects in the state (SuperPrep) as well as California's fifth-best offensive line recruit by Tom Lemming, earning first-team all-city and first-team all-Westside honors by the L.A. Times. Advanced to 36th on Rivals.com list of the nation's premier offensive tackle prospects after not taking up the sport until the ninth grade, and included among the Tacoma News Tribune's Western One-hundred selections. Possessed outstanding versatility as both a run blocker and protecting the passer, recording 65 pancake blocks for an offense that averaged 250 yards per game on the ground, in addition to not allowing a quarterback sack his junior or senior season. Defensively, credited with 10 tackles for loss and two quarterback sacks among his 55 stops, in addition to deflecting three passes and recovering one fumble.
