Overview
One of the most versatile tailbacks in college football, Little has been hampered by a long history of injury problems which seems to have come to a head after he underwent surgery in March to repair a left knee torn anterior cruciate ligament (also sprained his medial collateral ligament) that he suffered during Senior Bowl practices.
Since his high school senior year, Little has suffered four major knee injuries, battled turf toe, a deep thigh bruise, a left wrist dislocation and a back sprain. Despite his rash of injuries, he closed out his career as the school's third-leading all-time rusher with 2,996 yards. His 13 100-yard rushing performances rank tied for second in Wildcat annals and his average of 5.17 yards per rushing attempt placed him third on Kentucky's career record list.
With 5,343 yards, he joined Derek Abney (5,856 yards, 2000-03) as the only players in school history to amass more than 5,000 all-purpose yards in a career. He also is the only player in Kentucky annals to gain more than 2,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving in a career.
At T.L. Hanna High School, Little befriended James Kennedy, the subject of the movie "Radio." He earned All-American honors from Prep Star and was rated one of the nation's top 10 all-purpose backs by Rivals.com. The two-time All-State first-team choice was a three-time All-Conference selection and named the Anderson Touchdown Club Area Player of the Year as a junior and senior.
Little won the Touchdown Club's Area Player of the Week honor 19 times during his career and was twice selected the Anderson Independent Mail Area Player of the Year. He totaled 90 touchdowns in his career via rushing, pass receiving, kick returns and defense. He carried 202 times for 1,501 yards and 33 touchdowns as a senior, adding more than 500 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He amassed a total of 44 touchdowns his senior season, including one interception return for a score.
Little also started at linebacker as a junior and also rushed for 1,650 yards and 39 touchdowns. He had seven consecutive games with at least one punt return or kickoff return for a touchdown and led the team to the Class AAAA (largest classification) state playoffs all three of his seasons on the varsity.
A four-year letterman in basketball, Little scored 1,028 points in his career as a shooting guard. He was also a recipient of the Youth Leadership Award from the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.
In 2004, Little turned down scholarship offers from Kentucky, Nebraska, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina and Clemson to enroll at Kentucky, where he started three of nine games he played in. He finished second on the team with 265 yards and a score on 53 carries (5.0 avg), adding 136 yards and a touchdown on 12 receptions (11.3 avg), but fumbled the ball twice.
Little was a Sophomore All-American and first-team All-Southeastern Conference choice as a sophomore in 2005. He ranked fifth in the nation and led the SEC with an average of 180.18 all-purpose yards per game. He led the Wildcats with 197 attempts for 1,045 yards (5.3 avg) and nine touchdowns, adding 449 yards on a team-high 46 receptions (9.8 avg). He also returned 21 punts for 355 yards (16.9 avg) with 133 yards and a score on just three kickoff returns (44.3 avg), but had 10 fumbles, with four being recovered by the opposition.
Left knee and turf toe injuries limited Little to nine games in 2006. He still led the team with 140 carries for 673 yards (4.8 avg) and three touchdowns. He grabbed 31 passes for 392 yards (12.6 avg) and a pair of scores, adding another touchdown while averaging 22.6 yards on 14 punt returns. He also turned the ball over four times on six fumbles.
A deep thigh bruise forced Little to sit out three 2007 games and miss a good portion of two others. He totaled 1,013 yards on 190 rushes (5.3 avg) with thee scores, gaining 347 yards with a touchdown on 42 receptions (8.3 avg). He also returned 19 punts for 127 yards (6.7 avg), but had seven fumbles, losing four of those miscues.
In 39 games at Kentucky, Little started 27 contests. He carried 580 times for 2,996 yards (5.17 avg) and 16 touchdowns. He gained 1,324 yards on 131 receptions (10.1 avg), including four scores. He returned 60 punts for 854 yards (14.2 avg) and a touchdown, adding 169 yards and a score on seven kickoff returns (24.1 avg). He recorded four solo tackles and gained 5,343 all-purpose yards, an average of 137.0 yards per game. On 580 rushing attempts, he turned the ball over 13 times on 25 fumbles.
Analysis
Positives: Has to improve his size, bulk and strength, but has minimal body fat (4.2 percent) and large, soft hands, showing good extension, timing and route running ability as a receiver More quick than fast, but runs with short strides and can slip past a lethargic defender with nifty double moves and hip snap Has good feet and short-area quickness, showing good body control and balance coming out of his stance and into the holes Tough runner who works hard to finish the play Displays better vision running inside than when bouncing out to the perimeter Has ability to slide though traffic on stretch plays to the perimeter, but must show better patience allowing his blocks to develop Efficient route runner and does a good job on shorter circles and dump-offs Works to get open when flexed and has a good feel for the second level, doing a good job of settling underneath or getting to the ball on shallow routes Has natural hands to pluck the ball on the move, doing a nice job of bringing in the screen pass and locate defenders quickly Not easy to bring down once he gets into the open field, as he has good weave to avoid Needs to stay low in his pads to be effective, but when he does, he has good stop-and-start action to fool the defender Good at selling play fakes and as a receiver, he is alert to pocket pressure, working back to the ball with good urgency.
Negatives: Lacks ideal size, bulk and muscle definition Has smooth calves and thighs and a pigeon-toed stance Has been hampered by a rash of injury problems and his durability is extremely marginal Has had four surgical procedures on his knees and they have affected his lateral range and timed speed Has very poor ball security and is extremely fumble prone, turning the ball over 13 times on 25 fumbles Has a decent short-area burst, but possibly due to all of his injuries, he lacks a second gear to out-run defenders in the open Not a smart player on the field, as he will not only run into spots at times, but struggles to digest a complicated play and needs more than several reps to retain Willing blocker in pass protection but lacks size and strength, resulting in him constantly getting run over by the opponent Won't do extra reps in weight room and needs to be pushed in order to comply with the offseason training program Has decent foot quickness in a short area, but will gather to cut, more due to injuries Runs into offensive lineman at times and needs to show better patience waiting for his protection to develop Runs too high in his pads to be effective at pushing the pile Has adequate vision to locate creases, but tends to wait too long to take the ball through the rush lanes Does not have the leg drive to break tackles and with his bulk and size issues, he will never generate power as a runner Will flash a short-area burst at times, but lacks good acceleration to the corner and gets walked quite often Needs to create more on his own, but he lacks elusiveness in the open Tries to finish outside, but has very poor ball security and gets the ball ripped away after initial contact Lacks size and technique to block well, as he is constantly getting jerked and thrown by bigger defensive ends Fails to get a good base underneath him when position blocking.
Compares To: CHAD MORTON-ex-Washington While his running numbers might be impressive, Little might not get an opportunity to carry much at the next level, based on a combination of poor size, lack of strength, adequate foot speed and a rash of injuries that have him spending more time at the doctors than in practice. He could bring value as a punt returner or a slot receiver, but if you look at his injury report, teams are certain to shy away from him on draft day.
