Overview

Often compared to another mighty-mite safety in former Iowa star Bob Sanders, Hefney has similar instincts and is developing into a reliable open-field tackler in the same mold. Not nearly as physical as Sanders, Hefney relies more on positioning and athleticism to make plays. Willing to support the run, which combined with his coverage skills make him an intriguing cornerback prospect.

Analysis

Positives: Athletic and instinctive … Versatile athlete … Moved to free safety at the request of the Tennessee staff to get their best athletes onto the field … Natural cornerback who has the foot speed, change of direction and instant acceleration needed … Not a striker, but a reliable open-field tackler who isn't afraid of getting his jersey dirty … Lacks preferred height, but is an impressive leaper and times his jumps well to compete for passes.

Negatives: Size is an obvious liability, especially for safety … Not afraid of contact, but isn't the traditional striker in the secondary most teams prefer at free safety … If moved back to cornerback, Hefney will be making the transition back to a position he hasn't played since 2004.

High School

Played 2003 season at Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy and then re-signed with UT … Led Rock Hill (15-0) in 2002 with more than 80 tackles and five interceptions … Rock Hill was state's only undefeated prep team in 2002 … Had interception and fumble return for touchdowns … Rushed 98 times from quarterback position for 805 yards and 10 TDs … Completed 32-of-62 for 500 yards and four scores … All-Region on both offense and defense … As junior, made 81 tackles and intercepted five passes … Six interceptions first two seasons.
