Overview

Despite being undersized for a defensive tackle, Foster's low center of gravity and initial explosion off the snap allows him to consistently beat offensive linemen. He is especially effective at stringing plays wide, showing the relentless motor to chase down and neutralize screens and draw plays.

The coaches simply love his work ethic. His teammates often talk about Foster's "Clark Kent" personality, as it seems that he steps into a phone booth, changes into his football uniform and emerges as a vocal, emotional field leader. Once the game has ended, he changes back into street clothes and quietly disappears into the crowd.

At Homestead High School, Foster registered 107 tackles and three sacks as a middle linebacker in 2002, earning All-Dade County honors from the Miami Herald. He led his team to a 9-4 record (4-1 conference mark) and the regional final of the state football playoffs. He also played on the basketball team, scoring 11 points in a 66-38 win over South Dade, which clinched the District 16-6A championship.

Arriving on Rutgers' campus in 2003 as a 235-pounder, Foster spent the season red-shirting and bulking up his frame for a move to defensive end. He played in 11 games behind Val Barnaby at weak-side defensive end in 2004, producing 22 tackles (11 solos) with 1 ½ sacks, two stops for losses and three pressures.

Foster took over strong-side defensive end chores, starting the first two games of the 2005 campaign. He suffered a left knee anterior cruciate ligament tear vs. Villanova, missing the rest of the season, finishing with eight tackles (3 solos), an assisted sack and 2 ½ stops behind the line of scrimmage.

Foster took charge of the defense in 2006, serving as squad co-captain. He shifted to weak-side defensive tackle, earning first-team All-American and All-Big East Conference honors. He posted 51 tackles (18 solos) and ranked third on the team with six sacks. He also led the team with 13 ½ stops behind the line of scrimmage while collecting eight quarterback pressures. He also broke up four passes.

The team Defensive MVP was a first-team All-Big East and second-team All-American choice during his senior year. Firmly entrenched at defensive tackle, he made 64 tackles (23 solos) and led the team with 15 stops for losses and ranked second on the squad with seven sacks. He registered 17 pressures, three which led to interceptions, caused two fumbles and had his first career interception.

Analysis

Positives: Undersized for defensive tackle, but has good arm and shoulder muscle tone, well-defined thighs and calves and tight waist … Seems more suited and built to play inside linebacker in a 3-4 alignment and has experience at that position during his prep playing days … Quick twitch athlete who explodes into the gaps to create backfield havoc … Does a good job fighting blocking pressure, recognizing it quickly enough to slip by and avoid offensive linemen on the move … Hard to block because of his burst off the snap … Slippery pass rusher with the balance and body control to jump around blocks and give double teams lots of trouble when closing on the pocket due to his quickness and relentless motor … Has to be moving to be effective (not really a two-gap type) and relies on quickness to beat the block (not the type to sit around and read) … Plays the game on his feet and never gives up on plays … Strong enough to lock up the ballcarrier, and once he gets his hands on him the runner rarely escapes … Has an effective spin move to beat the blocker with his initial move … Uses his hands well to protect himself from low blocks … Because he plays inside, he generally gets garbage sacks, but he also has the balance and angling ability to impact the pocket coming off the edge … Has a quick first step off the ball and for a defensive tackle, he runs well to the sidelines … Has outstanding hand usage to work moves and does a very good job at reading screens and draws … Has a good grasp of the playbook and learns well … Coaches cite his work ethic and willingness to mentor the younger players for the team's success on defense the last two years … The coaches also call him the toughest player on the team … Stayed involved with the team in 2005, despite missing the season with an injury … Has a good first step that allows him to beat his man to the play and uses an array of pass rush moves to get into the backfield with no problem … Does a good job of wrapping up and bringing down the ballcarrier, whether in tight areas or in the open field … Uses his quick first step to get offensive linemen on their heels and to work his moves … Has the ability to work very difficult moves against offensive linemen, as he is sudden off the snap and very active with his hands … Has very good body control and balance scraping down the line, and even though he is not used often there he is fluid in his pass drops, getting good depth to keep plays in front of him.

Negatives: Fiery competitor who must be held back in camp because he goes too hard, but must play in better control on the field, as he will get too relentless in his pursuit and out-shoot the play … Has the ability to get upfield, but struggles to hold the point when he fails to use his hands to fend off blocks … Lacks the strength and technique to hold up against double-teams, usually relying on his initial burst to beat the lethargic blockers … For a defensive tackle, he runs well to the sidelines, but doesn't have the motor needed to be an impact pass rusher coming off the edge (good speed at defensive tackle, but not enough to play defensive end) … Shows adequate quickness to close on the quarterback, but he spends more time trying to avoid blocks, making him late to the pocket at times … Does not have the size you look for in a defensive tackle, and with just adequate speed for playing end he might be a player searching for an NFL position … Not considered a two-gap type due to size issues, but struggles getting off blocks playing the one-gap.

Compares To: DAN KLECKO-Philadelphia … Like Klecko, Foster is a great college player, but due to size and bulk issues he is not really an ideal defensive tackle. He might be brought into camp as a defensive end, but while he can penetrate the gaps from the inside with a good burst, he doesn't have the timed speed to be an impact edge rusher. He could trim down a bit and convert to middle linebacker, where he has high school experience. In rare chances to drop back in pass coverage, he shows the ability to do so. Finding a position is certainly going to be a daunting task, but as a camp player he is worth taking a look at.

Agility Tests

Campus: 4.89 in the 40-yard dash … 1.71 10-yard dash … 2.81 20-yard dash … 32 ½-inch vertical jump … 9'3" broad jump … Bench pressed 225 pounds 29 times … 410-pound bench press … 500-pound squat … 335-pound power clean … 32 5/8-inch arm length … 9 ¼-inch hands … Right-handed.
