Overview
A productive pass rusher off the edge for Pitt, Clermond is a bit of a 'tweener and only a marginal prospect for the NFL. A Second Team All-Big East pick after each of the past two seasons, Clermond averaged 15 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks during that span. Clermond has good initial quickness, but despite his size he plays with limited strength against the run and too often loses contain with wild pass rushes. He can find a niche at the next level as a pass rush specialist or potential 3-4 rush linebacker, but he isn't the NFL prospect his impressive stats would indicate.
Analysis
Positives: Good initial quickness off the snap to gain an advantage on the offensive tackle Can flatten out and pursue down the line Pursues well and can make the tackle for loss from behind Shows the burst and flashes the balance and open-field tackling skills to warrant a look at linebacker.
Negatives: Bit of a one trick pony as a pass rusher Good burst off the snap, but has only marginal hand technique to get off blocks once engaged and offers little in terms of pass rush moves Biggest concern might be his lack of strength at the point of attack in the running game Despite flashing athleticism, Clermond looks stiff when dropping back into coverage, raising concerns about his ability to transition to linebacker Takes wide angles as a pass rusher, too often losing contain Struggles to locate the ball and may lack the instincts to play linebacker even if he can make the move athletically.
