Overview

The former defensive back was far down the Blue Hens' depth chart when the coaching staff switched him to offense in 2004. He fought his way into the starting lineup, becoming the first player in school history to lead the team in rushing four times in a career. One of the team's hardest workers, that ethic paid off for Cuff, as he would finish seventh in NCAA Division 1-AA/FCS history with 4,364 yards rushing, third with 65 touchdowns rushing and third with 434 points scored.

Injuries sidetracked Cuff's quest for the record books as a junior, but he made up for lost time as a senior. In a season that rivaled Barry Sanders' 1988 campaign at Oklahoma State (2,628 yards and 37 touchdowns rushing), the Delaware halfback established new FCS season marks with 35 touchdowns on the ground, 39 total touchdowns and 234 points scored.

Cuff played his first two seasons at Roosevelt High School before transferring to C.H. Flowers High for his final two seasons. Competing at running back and free safety, he also returned kicks and punts, and punted for team. The 2002 Flowers squad ranked second in Prince Georges County and 13th in the state of Maryland.

Cuff earned All-Metro and All-County honors as a senior. He enjoyed a standout career in which he surpassed 2,000 yards rushing, 1,000 yards receiving, and 4,000 all-purpose yards. He also averaged over 30 yards per kickoff return for his career. He was named team Most Valuable Player twice in football and twice in track-and-field at Flowers. He won the indoor 300-meter and 4x400-meter relay regional championships as a senior and was also an honor roll student.

Cuff attended Delaware Technical College in 2003 after originally enrolling at Delaware. He returned to Delaware in time to compete in 2004 spring camp, where he competed in the defensive backfield. He worked his way up the depth chart in the fall, after switching to offense, starting three of the eight games he played in. He led the Blue Hens with 673 yards and eight touchdowns on 154 carries (4.4 avg), adding 11 yards on two catches while recording three tackles.

As a sophomore, Cuff was a third-team All-American, first-team All-Atlantic Ten Conference and an ECAC All-Star. He paced the team and ranked second in the league with 1,205 yards on 249 attempts, scoring 14 times on the ground. He also led the squad with 41 receptions for 414 yards (101.1 avg) and four scores, compiling 108 points.

Cuff was off to a solid start in 2006, but was sidelined at midseason with a left ankle sprain that forced him to miss four contests. He still managed to lead the team with 124 carries for 541 yards (4.4 avg) and eight touchdowns. He snatched 31 passes for 277 yards (8.9 avg), scoring 50 points.

The consensus All-American and unanimous All-Colonial Athletic Association choice led the nation in scoring with an FCS single-season record 234 points. He led the league with 1,945 yards, set the national record with 35 touchdowns and carried 398 times (4.9 avg). He added 554 yards and four scores on 55 receptions (10.1 avg), finishing with a league-high 2,499 all-purpose yards.

In 41 games at Delaware, Cuff started 34 contests. He carried 925 times for 4,364 yards (4.7 avg) and 65 touchdowns. He hauled in 129 passes for 1,256 yards (9.7 avg) and eight scores. He totaled 436 points and amassed 5,620 all-purpose yards, an average of 137.07 yards per game.

Analysis

Positives: Little high cut and lacks ideal size, but shows adequate muscle development … Has marginal durability, but is a tough, physical inside runner … When healthy, he shows flashes of outstanding speed and burst … Has quick feet and good shiftiness and balance … Good program type whose work ethic has allowed him to take big steps every year in regard to learning the system, and has now mastered the offense … Shows good vision on the field … Works hard at everything he does and is harder on himself than the coaches are … The staff is impressed with how much he has grown and improved since his freshman year … Has no problem finding the hole or letting it develop, showing good patience following his blockers … Has the strength and body control to take a hit and keep running … Shows good quickness and exceptional balance through the holes … Explodes through the seams and has that quick sidestep that consistently makes second-level defenders miss … Has the ability to turn the corner, using his sharp change-of-direction skills, but is better when his pads are square … Shows the ability to make one or two cuts in the open field, but not much more … Has no problems with hanging on to the ball, having fumbled just four times on 925 carries (has lost just 75 yards on those rushing attempts) … Runs at a high pad level, but has good leg drive up the middle … Does not shy away from contact running through traffic and can execute a forceful stiff-arm to keep defensive backs in check … Needs to runs lower to the ground, but keeps his shoulders squared and has effective stop-and-go action and the vision to set his blocks up … Knows how to shorten his stride to get through trash and shows good spin ability to separate from defenders, along with the forward body lean to gain yards after the initial hit … Lacks suddenness to freeze defenders in one-on-one situations, but does a good job of selling on the route, as he uses adequate double moves and head fakes to elude … Used mostly on controlled routes, nothing fancy, but is a quarterback's safety valve for his ability to work back with good urgency when he sees the pocket pressured.

Negatives: Took him longer to understand the system than other players, but he has no problems once he gets it … Lacks leadership ability, spending more time on his own, but his teammates seemed to have accepted this and he is not disruptive in the locker room … Shows only adequate ability to get out of his stance and to the hole quickly when he gets too tall in his pads … For his size, he does a good job of staying low, but when he starts to run higher, defenders have good success in driving him back through the rush lane … That high stance leads to a lot of nagging injuries and even though he has missed only four games during his career, he will be in the trainer's room more than on the practice field during the season, as he always seems to be nicked up … Runs routes out of the backfield, but nothing too difficult, as he will drift too much in long patterns … Lacks natural hands, but has limited his drops with each subsequent year … As a blocker, he does only what is required, but not much more, as he does not like to perform in that aspect of his game … Better cut blocker than one who will face up, but when blocking in-line he needs to at least make an attempt to occupy a defender.

Compares To: AHMAD BRADSHAW-New York Giants … Like Bradshaw, Cuff will probably wear down if he had to carry as much in the NFL as he did at Delaware last year. However, for a change of pace, he could be a nice complement in a backfield sharing time with a bigger back. He is not a great route-runner, but is effective on screens and controlled routes to add value as a third-down back. Look for someone to take him late in the draft. He has the ability to bring good depth to a backfield needing to give their full-time runner a breather.

High School

Attended Roosevelt High School before transferring to C.H. Flowers (Springdale, Mary.) High for his final two seasons … Played football for head coach Rich Houchens at Roosevelt and for Mike Mayo at Flowers … Competing at running back and free safety, he also returned kicks and punts, and punted for team … The 2002 Flowers squad ranked second in Prince Georges County and 13th in the state of Maryland … That year, Cuff earned All-Metro and All-County honors as a senior … He enjoyed a standout career in which he surpassed 2,000 yards rushing, 1,000 yards receiving and 4,000 all-purpose yards … Also averaged more than 30 yards per kickoff returns for his career … Named team Most Valuable Player twice in football and twice in track-and-field at Flowers … Won the indoor 300-meter and 4x400-meter relay regional championships as a senior and was also an honor roll student.
