Overview
Bernard has been the Beavers' workhorse since stepping into the starting lineup as a sophomore. Over his next three seasons, he rushed for more than 1,000 yards each year, becoming the seventh player in Pac-10 Conference history to boast a trio of 1,000-yard campaigns.
His 3,862 yards on the ground rank second in school history and sixth on the league career record books. His 38 touchdowns on the ground placed him third on the OSU all-time record list, while his 242 points scored rank fourth in school history. He also owns three of the top 10 rushing performances on the OSU annual rushing list.
At Boca Raton High School, Bernard started at tailback, fullback and strong safety during his four-year career. He was a member of the Palm Beach Post "Perfect 10" squad and was an honorable mention All-State as a senior, adding first-team All-South Florida honors that year. Super Prep also selected him to the All-Region team. As a junior, he helped the team to the division title as a junior with a 9-1 record as a senior.
Bernard rushed for 3,000-plus yards during his career, including more than 1,400 yards and 21 touchdowns as a senior. He also accounted for 13 receptions for 190 yards and a touchdown during his final campaign. He was also a standout in baseball and was a 30th-round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins.
Bernard followed prep teammate, safety Sabby Piscitelli, to Oregon State, where the tailback red-shirted in 2003. He saw minimal action in 10 games in 2004, running for 20 yards on six tries, as he averaged 6.1 yards on 13 punt returns and 18.2 yards on five kickoff returns.
In 2005, Bernard was an All-Pac 10 Conference honorable mention. He produced the fifth-best rushing season in school history, gaining 1,321 yards with 13 touchdowns on 299 carries (4.4 avg). He also hauled in 33 passes for 316 yards (8.5 avg) and a score, finishing with 1,637 all-purpose yards, an average of 148.8 yards per game.
Bernard was named team captain, earning All-Pac 10 first-team honors as a junior. He ran for 1,307 yards, the sixth-best season total by a Beaver back, carrying 296 times (4.4 avg) with 12 touchdowns. He finished second on the squad with 43 receptions, good for 276 yards and a score (6.4 avg), but missed the Southern California clash with a right ankle sprain. He averaged 121.8 all-purpose yards in 2006.
As a senior, Bernard started 11 games, undergoing right knee arthroscopic knee surgery that cost him two late-season contests after getting hurt vs. Washington State. He was also bothered most of the year by a left shoulder sprain, but still earned All-Pac 10 second-team recognition. His 1,214 yards rushing rank eighth on the school single-season record list, as he rushed 275 times (4.4 avg) for 13 touchdowns. He again ranked second on the squad with 36 catches for 179 yards (5.0 avg) and a score. The team captain amassed 1,393 all-purpose yards, an average of 126.6 yards per game.
In 45 games at Oregon State, Bernard started 35 contests. He carried 876 times for 3,862 yards (4.4 avg) and 38 touchdowns. He caught 118 passes for 790 yards (6.7 avg) and three scores. He also added 79 yards on 13 punt returns (6.1 avg) and 91 yards on five kickoff returns (18.2 avg). He totaled 4,822 all-purpose yards, an average of 107.2 yards per game.
Analysis
Positives: Has a short frame, but is compact and sturdy with good upper body muscle tone, defined thighs and calves and large hands for a player his size Productive inside runner with a low center of gravity Efficient receiver coming out of the backfield with adequate change of direction agility Shows good body control and hand/ eye coordination catching the ball in a crowd Learns and retains football well and is an instinctive player with a good feel for his block protection Physical competitor who runs hard until the whistle Coachable team player who has complete respect in the locker room and his players seem to rally around him Patient and instinctive runner with good vision Scurries behind the line to find a seam and uses blockers well when attacking the perimeter Smart, competitive runner who gets a lot of tough yards inside Shows vision to find the cutback lane, and though compact, he is tough and strong for his size Has good balance and breaks arm tackles Patiently follows blockers to the outside on the stretch zone and bounces outside effectively Shows enough quickness and elusiveness in the hole and makes guys miss in space, but can be caught from behind (lacks long speed) Does an adequate job of protecting the ball with his body Runs screens, flat routes and check downs effectively from the backfield Has big hands for a smaller guy and catches very well with hands Willingly steps up to take on defensive linemen or linebackers, even though he gives up a lot of bulk, facing up with good aggression in-line and takes good angles when utilized as a cut blocker Has the lateral agility to squeeze through tight areas and shows good body lean falling forward for additional yardage Has good upper body power to stiff-arm a defender in attempts to separate Natural hands catcher who will reach and pluck away from his frame Lacks the speed to turn the corner for big gains, but is best running between tackles, as he has the balance and low pad level to fight to the markers Gets most of his yards after initial contact and is tough to bring own in isolated situations.
Negatives: Lacks speed and explosiveness, showing no second gear to separate Not really a pile mover, relying more on his low pad level to get inside yardage Shows just adequate quickness to and through the hole When running, he needs a wide hole, as he does not have the size or power to create one Not featured as an outside runner and won't turn corner on his own, as any burst he can generate is usually short-lived Is often late to the hole and lacks the sudden burst to escape at times Not special in his ability to make defenders miss, and though he works on ball security, he occasionally loses the ball after he hits the ground Lacks the speed and range to be a wide receiver and despite good hands, his catching radius is limited Lacks size, bulk and technique to block vs. bigger blockers, but does show good effort Not really effective moving the pile, making him marginal, at best, in short-yardage situations Must maintain his concentration better as a pass catcher, as he tends to lose sight of the ball and gets distracted when he hears the defender closing on him Durability is becoming a concern, as his high amount of carries started taking its toll on his frame last year Best chance in the pro ranks is as a third-down back.
Compares To: MEWELDE MOORE-Pittsburgh Bernard piled up lots of yardage at OSU, but you have to wonder if he might have left his best game on the college football field. He averaged 25 carries per game the last three years and the result was a rash of injuries during his senior season. With no semblance of speed, he might get a shot as a camp player due to his receiving skills, but he lacks the sand in his pants to be a pile mover or short-yardage runner in the pro ranks.
