Overview

Husain would love to join his brother, former WSU safety Hamza (now with the Denver Broncos), in the National Football League. Husain, a three-year starter at free safety, made his own name in Pullman, earning honorable mention All-Pac 10 honors as a senior with 93 tackles, 8 ½ for loss, four interceptions and six passes broken up. Potential is there for a quality versatile backup and special teams performer.

Analysis

Positives: Shows good instincts … Plays downhill with attitude, stepping up quickly to support the run and closing well on screens and other short routes … Will break down and wrap up to make the tackle in space on backs … Willing to throw his body around to fill a hole or stop a back from getting the extra yard … Fair hands for the interception, and can make a play on the ball in the air … Will go for the strip after securing the tackle … Contributed on special teams in college, and will continue to do so in the NFL.

Negatives: A bit of a free-strong safety 'tweener … Lacks the fluid hips and range to play deep or cover in space and he also does not have the strength to hold up in trash inside … Needs to keep his head up when tackling … Has a tough time bringing down larger backs and receivers in the open field unless he cuts … Struggles in his backpedal, needs to keep the play in front of him.

High School

Coached by John Capraro at Pomona High … also lettered twice in basketball and three times in golf … golf team captain as a junior and football team captain as a senior … as a SOPHOMORE team's defensive MVP and Rookie of the Year … all-league honorable mention on defense … during JUNIOR year named team's defensive specialist of the year … All-Miramonte League defensive first team and second team All-Inland Valley team, also on defense … SENIOR year ranked No. 9 safety on the West Coast by Greg Biggins of PacWest Football … named to second team All-CIF … hauled in a key, 65-yard touchdown pass in Pomona's 35-21 win over University in the second round of the CIF Division IX playoffs … CIF Div. 9 defensive player of the year … named to the All-CIF All-Division second team … first team All-Valle Vista League as both a defensive back and wide receiver … team Red Devil of the Year … Daily Bulletin first team defensive back and Inland Valley first team, also on defense.

Personal

Born July 27, 1985, at Los Angeles … parents Yusuf and Sa'eeda Johnwell … brothers, Abbas, Hamza, Esa, Salih, Mustafa and Musa and sisters, Hajirah, Aliyyah, Aisha and Sabriah … played with brother Hamza in WSU's defensive backfield … also a high school teammate of Cougar defensive linemen Odell Howard … enjoys playing golf, video games and reading … prep golf and football clubs president.
