Overview
Schilens definitely flew under the radar most of his senior season despite his size and speed. A three-year starter, Schilens had 35 catches for 679 yards and three touchdowns in only eight games as a senior.
He had relative success in his sophomore and junior years, averaging 34 catches, 447 yards and two touchdowns. But he really turned heads with his on-campus workout, where he ran a 4.38-second 40-yard dash and posted a 43-inch vertical jump.
Analysis
Positives: Prototypical height and straight-line speed ... A bit lanky, but has a well-built upper body and long, muscular arms ... Will go get the jump ball at its highest point, which is usually well above smaller defenders ... Can also use his hands to separate downfield and his body to shield corners from the ball ... Should be an excellent red-zone target ... Reminiscent of current NFL and former SDSU receiver Jeff Webb, currently with the Chiefs.
Negatives: Not particularly strong at the line or as a blocker ... Does not play quite as fast as he tests ... Inconsistent hands and will drop the easy catch while making the hard one ... Will body catch too often instead of snatching it with his hands ... A perimeter deep threat, he does not excel in traffic over the middle ... Coaches even question his ability to stay healthy and focused.
Career Notes
Had consecutive 100-yard receiving games in 2007, and had a career-high 97-yard touchdown catch on Nov. 24 against TCU ... Shared the captains award and won the President's Award for Most Improved Scholastic Achievement for the Aztecs in 2007.
High School
An all-region pick in Arizona as a free safety and receiver ... Caught 35 passes for 648 yards ... Recorded 53 tackles with six interceptions on the defensive side ... Credited with four pass break-ups and caused three fumbles ... Also earned four varsity letters in baseball and was an all-region selection as an outfielder ... An invitee to the Arizona state all-star football game ... Was drafted in the 34th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Detroit Tigers out of high school.
Personal
Born Nov. 7, 1985, in Lancaster, Calif ... Son of Tim and Kim Schilens ... Anthropology major.
