Overview
A team willing to gamble on pure athleticism could find a diamond in the rough in the Buffalos' Allen, who originally signed with Nebraska out of high school. Solidly built, Allen's rare speed makes him one of the more intriguing second-day linebacker prospects. As athletic as Allen is, however, he remains a very raw talent and one with considerable character red-flags.
Analysis
Positives: High cut, athletic build with room to add. Best asset is his pure athleticism. All-conference performer at Fresno City Junior College as a linebacker and safety. Reads the action quickly and has rare sideline to sideline speed to beat the back to the outside. Athletic enough to avoid blocks and make the play. Flashes explosiveness as a hitter.
Negatives: Relies on his athleticism to make up for only marginal instincts, physicality and technique. Despite background as a safety, Allen struggles in getting depth in his drops into pass coverage and can be fooled by play-action. Struggles disengaging from blocks. Good explosive hitter, but fails to wrap up. Considerable character red-flags. Spent time with five different universities, including three junior colleges.
High School
Outstanding athlete who excelled in football, basketball, baseball and track at Atlantic Community High School. Honored as first team All-Conference, All-Area and All-State. Helped led team to a 13-1 record during his senior season.
