Overview
The Buffaloes have been known for producing clutch receivers at the tight end position, with former Colorado players Daniel Graham (Denver) and Joe Klopfenstein (Rams) presently plying their skills in the National Football League. Based on his performance as a senior, many scouts feel DeVree will soon join those two in the professional ranks.
DeVree's eight touchdown catches in 2007 were the most ever by a Colorado tight end in a season. With 402 yards receiving during his final year, he became just the sixth Buff tight end to amass more than 400 yards in a season.
At Hudsonville High School, DeVree earned Grand Rapids Press All-State Dream Team honors as a tight end his senior year. He was named to the Detroit News Blue Chips list, Detroit Free Press Fab 50 Squad and was a first-team All-Ottawa-Kent Conference choice. He also played in the Michigan high school All-Star game after capping a brilliant career at Hudsonville where he finished with 98 career receptions, including a single-season school record 53 in his final year.
During that campaign, DeVree's 53 grabs were good for 828 yards (15.6 avg) and he also scored five touchdowns. His top prep moment was when he posted 10 receptions for 160 yards and one score in a loss to Jenison. He lettered three times in football, as the team went 8-3 his senior season before surrendering in the semifinal round of the state playoffs. He also lettered twice in basketball and baseball, where he was an All-Conference pick on the baseball diamond.
DeVree enrolled at Western Michigan in 2003 and was immediately thrust into the lineup, sharing tight end duties with Anthony Kiner. He ranked fourth on the team with 30 catches for 321 yards (11.0 avg) and three touchdowns in 12 games. The following season, he appeared in 11 games, joining Tony Scheffler (Denver) in the team's double-tight end formation. He grabbed 25 passes for 218 yards (8.7 avg) and three scores, adding one assisted tackle.
In 23 games at Western Michigan, DeVree came up with 55 receptions for 549 (10.0 avg), as he produced six touchdown grabs. He also recorded one assisted tackle.
DeVree sat out the 2005 season after transferring to Colorado, spending the time undergoing arthroscopic surgery on both shoulders. He started three of 11 games for the Buffs in 2006, but had a bit of a health scare during August camp when he was sidelined by an air bubble in his lung that was caused by a rib injury. He was also bothered early in the year by a hip strain. He had just four catches for 36 yards (9.0 avg) that year, but two grabs were for 10 yards or longer and one was good for a touchdown.
Even though DeVree started only three games in 2007, he was actually the team's primary tight end (team opened in nine games with a multiple receiver format). He had a banner senior campaign, hauling in 37 passes for 402 yards (10.9 avg), as his eight touchdowns were the most ever by a Buff tight end in a season. He suffered a concussion vs. Miami (Oh.) that sidelined him for the Baylor clash.
In 23 games at Buffalo, DeVree started six contests. He went on to catch 41 passes for 438 yards (10.7 avg) and nine touchdowns. He recovered an onside kickoff for no gain and also recovered a blocked kick.
Analysis
Positives: Has a big frame with room for additional bulk and growth without it affecting his overall speed Has long arms, big hands and good leaping ability in attempts to high point the pass Has just adequate quickness and is not really used as a deep threat, but he can separate underneath While his routes need work, he has enough upper body flexibility to adjust and make plays on the off-target throws Adequate at getting a clean release off the line, but needs to generate a strong hand punch to defeat the press Knows how to avoid the defender working in the short area, where he is a decent route runner with the ability to spot the soft areas in the zone Better as a cut blocker than when stationed at the line, as he has a good feel for taking proper angles and stalking the linebackers Does not have the lateral range to escape and get up field and his routes need to be crisper, but he is a big target over the middle with the courage to get to the ball in a crowd Has the natural hands and arm extension to catch away from his frame and it is rare to see him have concentration lapses Does a good job of looking the ball in, maintaining focus, even with defenders draped on him Uses his good leaping ability to compete for the ball Best when used on curls, flats and underneath option routes Will line up in the slot to gain advantage on the smaller defender Plays with nice body control and does a good job of keeping his feet along the sidelines When used in possession situations, he has the size to push up field Will win most jump ball battles, especially inside the red zone Smart player who needs just minimal reps to retain.
Negatives: Has adequate timed speed, but is not fluid changing direction and looks a bit stiff coming out of his breaks Has a developing frame, but possesses marginal strength for his position and is just an adequate blocker, as he does not have a strong anchor to stave off the bull rush and his hand punch generates little thud to shock or jolt his opponent His tall frame causes him to struggle when having to sink his pads or knee bend, as his high stance also allows blockers to get into his body in attempts to press or redirect him Must be more precise running routes, but because of his high pads and poor knee bend, he will drift or take soft angle cuts at the top of the routes Does not have the second gear to escape or an array of moves to elude defenders after the catch (also does not have the power to break arm tackles) Needs to be more sudden in his initial thrust off the snap, as he needs room to build to top speed Best on controlled routes, as he does not have the quickness to get to the seam Has had some minor injuries that could lead to durability concerns with chronic shoulder issues.
Compares To: TONY SCHEFFLER-Denver Much like his former teammate at Western Michigan, DeVrees is a solid short-area receiver who does a nice job of extending for the ball in a crowd. He lacks RAC ability and quickness to get into the seam routes and needs to greatly improve his upper body strength. He makes a good effort as a blocker, but is usually walked back into the pocket in pass protection. For teams that use multiple tight end formations, he could be a nice option as a third-down receiver. To earn more playing time, he will have to bulk up more, add strength and hopefully improve his quickness and show better hips coming out of his breaks.
