Analysis: The Mavericks are better off with Kidd than they were without him. He gives Dallas intangibles it didn't have before. Meanwhile, New Jersey gets what it wanted. Not only do the Nets avoid having Stackhouse on the payroll for two years as a result of a buyout, but they get Diop's expiring contract and a big man who will help their other young bigs improve. Atlanta Hawks get:
Mike Bibby
Sacramento Kings get:
Shelden Williams
Lorenzen Wright
Anthony Johnson
Tyronn Lue
2008 Second-round draft pick
Analysis: Ideally, you never want to give up cap flexibility in the position the Hawks are in. Bibby is not the missing piece that is going to win them a championship. Still, they need to make the playoffs this season. They need to get fans in Atlanta excited about their basketball team, which isn't going to happen if they go four-and-out come the playoffs. Phoenix Suns get:
Shaquille O'Neal
Miami Heat get:
Shawn Marion
Marcus Banks
Analysis: In discussing this move with viable league sources, including general managers of other teams, the prevailing question was not, "What does O'Neal have left?" but rather, "Why would Phoenix do this?" The Suns have the Western Conference's best record through 48 games despite chemistry issues that have been in play all season, starting with Marion's September trade demand to recent exploratory discussions about Amare Stoudemire's future with the team. Pau Gasol
Memphis Grizzlies get:
Kwame Brown
Javaris Crittenton
Aaron McKie
Marc Gasol (rights)
First-round picks in 2008 & 2010
Analysis: L.A. gives up relatively little to get the franchise big man it has coveted since Shaquille O'Neal left town. Gasol is a former All-Star who can fill in at center until Andrew Bynum's knee injury heals, and then switch over to power forward, giving the Lakers a pair of 7-footers up front. Full Story
