SuperSonics general manager Sam Presti put to rest two weeks of speculation on who the team's future head coach will be with one word.

"Absolutely," Presti answered when asked whether P.J. Carlesimo would be back.

Presti created uncertainty about the coaching situation when he declined to affirm after the final game that Carlesimo would be back for his second season. Known for his thoroughness, Presti said he needed to talk with Carlesimo and Sonics chairman Clay Bennett to figure out the direction of the team before making his decision.

Fueling speculation that Carlseimo could be on his way out was the availability of talented coaches like former Dallas coach Avery Johnson and Larry Brown, recently hired by the Charlotte Bobcats.

However, Presti confirmed on May 1 that Carlesimo, who is in the final year of a two-year deal that pays him $3 million a season, will be back next year.

"Anytime you go through a tough year, you sit down and you have to review things," Presti said. "We've done that. And we're both committed to continue to build the best basketball operation that we can. And we're going to move forward."

For his part, Carlesimo said he wasn't overly concerned about the speculation and felt as if he would return for another season.

"It's not a question of assurances. You know, you (only) get told if you are not coaching," Carlesimo said. "Sam and I have had great conversations."

Although there was some grumbling from veteran players about Carlesimo's grating personality during the season, Seattle rookie Kevin Durant said Carlesimo still has the support of the players.

"Even though we were losing, and we didn't win as many games as would have liked, everybody respected P.J. a lot," Durant said. "And I think he did a great job this year even though our record doesn't show that ... how he interacted with us during practice and during games, and as for myself how much he trusted me to take a last shot or even (would) run plays for me. I'm glad he's been my coach in my first year."

--With two first-round draft picks and some salary cap space to work with, the Sonics are in position to make some moves during the offseason and will look to continue their rebuilding process after setting a franchise record for losses this season.

At present, the Sonics will save about $8 million in cap space over the next two years. And Seattle also still holds trade exceptions worth about $3 million and $1.8 million to sweeten any future trades.

Seattle has solid building blocks in place with Kevin Durant -- the NBA Rookie of the Year this season -- and fellow rookie Jeff Green, who played better the second half of the season.

The Sonics have 11 players under contract at season's end. Probably joining Durant and Green to form the nucleus of Seattle's future roster are forwards Nick Collison and Chris Wilcox, point guard Earl Watson, reserve swingman Damien Wilkins and center Johan Petro.

Players that could be on their way out include guard Luke Ridnour, swingman Mickael Gelabale and Robert Swift.

"You've got to get what you can get," Seattle coach P.J. Carlesimo said about the draft in terms of needs for his team. "We need a lot of things. I don't think there's a lot of things we don't need or can't get better at. We certainly need to shoot it better from outside. We'd love a low-post presence. We need to be better defensively. We need to take care of the ball better.

"When you win 19 games, there's a lot of things you're not doing well, particularly in the West."

Ridnour was injured early in the season and lost playing time as Watson emerged as the starting point guard. And with both making around $6 million next season, Ridnour could be on the trading block this summer. Gelabale suffered a torn ACL in his right knee with about a month left in the season and will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season. Gelabale will return to France to rehabilitate his knee, and may remain in Europe to continue his basketball career.

Swift suffered through an injury-plagued season in which he struggled to return from major knee reconstructive surgery at the start of the season, sitting out for two months to let the injury heal. On his return in February, Swift suffered a torn meniscus in the same knee and will have to rehabilitate the injury during the summer. Swift is a restricted free agent at the end of this season, and the Sonics will have to decide if they want to continue to invest money and time into the 7-footer to see if he will develop.

Fellow 7-footer Mouhamed Sene also suffered a torn meniscus while playing for the team's Development League affiliate, the Idaho Stampede, and also needs to get healthy this summer -- he underwent knee surgery in mid-April. Although he only appeared in 14 games this season, The Sonics' brass was impressed with how he performed in the development league, where Sene earned co-Defensive Player of the Year honors, averaging 12.4 points, nine rebounds and two blocks a game. However, Sene still remains a project and has a lot to learn.

Donyell Marshall ($5.95 million) and Adrian Griffin ($1.7 million) both have a year remaining on their contract and could be brought back for next season, while Francisco Elson's contract expires at the end of the season, and he likely will not be back next year.

Late season pickup Ronald Dupree showed flashes of energy and athleticism in the little minutes he played during the last few weeks of the season, and could be brought back to participate in the Orlando summer league for the Sonics.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT
Playing in perhaps the last home game at Seattle's KeyArena in Sonics history last Sunday, the Sonics put on a performance to remember in a 99-95 win over the Dallas Mavericks. Seattle rookie Kevin Durant hit the game winner, a 15-foot jumper from the elbow with under a minute left. Afterwards, Sonics fans stood chanting "Save Our Sonics" for two minutes. Durant said he almost cried after the game.

TURNING POINT
Seattle started the beginning of the season on an eight-game losing streak -- a foreshadowing of the miserable season to come as the Sonics lost a franchise-record 62 games.

Clay Bennett's attorneys apparently are trying to make the case in their legal fight to break a lease at Key Arena that the Sonics' departure from Seattle would have no impact on the city. That the dollars that now go to games at Key Arena would just go to other local entertainment options. This runs TOTALLY counter to every argument the NBA has ever made for building a new arena: that ...(more)

After a couple of weeks of reading everything I could find about Bennett and the purchase of the Sonics, my conclusion is that Bennett is only a small part of the Sonics impending relocation. I will agree that he intended to move the Sonics to OKC. I believe that he knew all along that Seattle would not build a new arena. That is the city of Seattle,s fault. I feel the city knew that the S ...(more)

it was reported that if either the Schultz or cities case wins then OKC was going to be looking into filing a lawsuit against the city of Howard for rights to the team because after the board of governors vote and the lease agreement they reach and all the money they have spent into bringing the NBA into there city..I was seriously wondering if that was true or just overhyped speculation because i ...(more)

Are there any Sonic fans who have connections with Save Our Sonics who can orchestrate some form of protest at this years NBA Finals regardless of where it is so that SOS T-shirts and banners can be passed out or reach out to the fans of the teams in the Finals and get them to chant "YOU SCREWED SEATTLE!!" to David Stern during the trophy presentation. I'd love to make David Stern's expe ...(more)

This whole situation is driving me nuts...Are they coming or aren't they? I do have to say that much of the crap I have read from both sides is rediculous more often than not. Let's summerize what we have learned so far by most people that have posted:

1. Many people from both cities are ignorant and hateful.

2. Many people from both cities assume rather than follow so ...(more)

Listen folks I think the personal attacks have gotten way out of hand on this board.

Look citizens of OKC most of us arent out here to attack you personally. We are attacking the rich and greedy men like Howard Schultz and Clay Bennett who have brought us to this point. Its understandable to be upset at a man like Bennett who openly lied to the citizens of Seattle about his intent to k ...(more)

Ok...I know the title is dramatic. Let me debunk some complaints coming from Seattle.

  1. Complaint: Taxpayers shouldn't pay to fix up an arena for a bunch of millionaires.
  2. Answer: Whoever owns the arena should fix it up. The city shouldn't pay to recarpet your dumpy house. The owner shouldn't pay to fix up your sagging arena.
  3. Complaint: ...(more)

Candlestick Park had an alternative configuration to allow for the 49ers to play on Sundays.

The Alamo Dome had an alternative configuration to allow the Spurs to play there.

Safeco Field is perhaps the nicest stadium in the country.

It seems funny that nobody has made an effort to see if it would be plausible to ...(more)
