It could be the most important decision he makes while in New York, so Knicks president Donnie Walsh wasn't rushing the process. But in the end, it appeared that Walsh had chosen Mike D'Antoni -- and not Mark Jackson -- to be the Knicks' new head coach.

It's a fascinating choice. D'Antoni comes from a Phoenix Suns team that has averaged 58 wins per season over the last two years. The Knicks have won a total of only 56 games in that span and, because of salary cap issues, don't figure to get much better anytime soon.

If D'Antoni wants his new team to run, he's going to need to find some new pieces. Starting with plodding big men Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph, the Knicks don't have much mobility.

Jackson would have been a popular choice because he's a former Knick and is from New York. But D'Antoni's resume obviously was more attractive to Walsh and the Knicks.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT
There wasn't anything happening on the court all season to get excited about, so New York didn't react until the Knicks went out and hired Donnie Walsh as the new president of basketball operations with two weeks to go in the season. It was a signal that ownership was no longer charmed by Isiah Thomas, who failed to deliver in four-plus seasons as president and two seasons as head coach and was fired.

TURNING POINT
Embattled head coach Isiah Thomas lost respect in the locker room after Stephon Marbury learned he might get benched on a flight to Phoenix where the Knicks were kicking off the first extended road trip of the season. Marbury went AWOL for a game, and when he came back, Thomas gave the controversial point guard extended minutes against the wishes of his teammates. When the Knicks got home following the winless trip out West, they had a 2-7 record and no confidence.

(POLL) Who should be the new Knicks coach? Some of these guys haven't been let go by their respective teams yet, but don't let that stop you for voting for them. If you don't like any of them, tell us who you think it should be....

(POLL) I have been watching ESPN's coverage of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and I have to wonder, who is the flashiest dresser?  Clyde has style, and DOn Cherry for decades has had flash.  What do you think?

Jamaal Tinsley has overstayed his welcome here.  Would you guys trade for him?  If you would, we'd be willing to take any of your bad contracts off your hands (with the exception of Eddy Curry and ...(more)

To start things off, yes D'Antoni is a very good coach. He, however, is not what the Knicks need. The reason we did not win games was becuase the lack of defense. D'Antoni does not coach defense. Does this make any sense to you? I am just saying lets not hype this thing up like everyone did when ...(more)

I am not sure about this. We do not have his type of players. He's an offensive minded coach. Run and gun.We need a strong hard nosed defensive coach. Just my .02

I can see that sman1965 bothers almost every team on their message board. While trash talking is fun, just seeing this guys posts makes me fell like I am back in the 3rd grade.

I am proposing a boycott of any thread he starts, and to any posts he makes on other threads as well...

Maybe he will start to talk smart sports conversation or maybe he will jus ...(more)

You guys can forget Mike D'Antoni is going to do anything positive to your team, because he's not. If he couldn't make it with the high-flying Pheonix Suns, then he sure as hell won't make it with the New York Knicks. Knicks will be lucky to even win 25% of there ...(more)

Mark Jackson's name has been thrown around.  Herb is going to be interviewed.  And a few sites have reported a potential return of Jeff Van Gundy.  Some have discussed even Rick Carlisle.

Sound off.  Who do you think it will be and how would you want it to be?

I know this is weird coming from a knick fan but please Isiah, if you are still around, trade Jamaal Crawford to a contending team in the offseason. He is a very talented player who can score pass and on a good team may even try and play defense imagine what he good do on a team like Utah who needs a better scorer at that position. He could play on any type of team send him to Houston and hell be ...(more)

Could someone tell me why the Knicks are still trying to when and lower what slim chance they had at landing Michael Beasley or Derrick Rose. The season had been lost months ago. Look at what the Heats did started resting there players with these so-called season ending injuries so they can secure that #1 pick.

It sounds like a bad idea to me, however I thought it was time for him to go at the end of the '90's and now I terribly miss those days.  Here is the news report...
