Clippers report: Notes, quotes
--Only four years ago, Shaun Livingston was viewed as the second coming of Magic Johnson. The Clippers used the fourth-overall pick in the draft to select him straight out of Peoria Central High School (Ill.). But a myriad of injuries, the most serious the near destruction of his left knee, has derailed Livingston's career and the Clippers quietly renounced their rights to him. Livingston was billed as the team's point guard of the future when he was drafted but he suffered a dislocated right knee cap in his rookie season, back and shoulder problems his second year, then that devastating knee injury in his third season, which caused him to miss the 2007-2008 season in its entirety. Coach Mike Dunleavy still hopes to be able to sign Livingston but at a very cut-rate salary. Certainly, it would be nothing near the $5.8 million that the Clippers would have had to offer him, before July 1, to retain his rights. --In addition to Livingston, the Clippers also renounced the rights to guard Dan Dickau, forwards Paul Davis and James Singleton and center Boniface Ndong. Neither Singleton nor Ndong were with the team this past season but remained on the salary books. Singleton subsequently signed with Dallas. Because of injuries and the buyout of guard Sam Cassell's contract, Dickau wound up starting a number of games late in the season. Davis had earned his way into the rotation until a torn anterior cruciate ligament, suffered in December, caused him to miss the remainder of the season. Davis said recently that he is running and hopes to be cleared for contact with a month. His hope is to be re-signed by the Clippers, although he said that he is keeping his options open. --The long-awaited opening of the Clippers' private practice facility in Playa Vista now is scheduled for August. There have been more than several delays on the scheduled opening for the facility, which was one of the promises made to Dunleavy, when he was hired in the summer of 2003.
