Mavericks report: Getting inside

The last three playoff exits weren't easy for any of the Mavericks to deal with, and the aftermath has opened up plenty of questions for a franchise in transition. Rick Carlisle was hired to help answer some of those questions.

"In any situation, there has to be an acceptance of where you are and that things that happened have happened for a reason," Carlisle said the day of his introductory press conference. "The one thing about change is there is an opportunity for things to be a little different, maybe the approach is a little bit different, maybe the tone is a little bit different, who knows?

"We've got to make sure that we approach these guys from the standpoint that we're going to drive them hard, but we're going to give them confidence and be supportive as well. You can't be as good a team as you possibly can be unless you have a coaching staff that's behind you."

Carlisle's vision of the team's offense next season goes right to the heart of the blockbuster trade that reshaped the roster.

"When you play with Jason Kidd, I think you've got to open up the floor and allow him to push it up and our wing guys are going to have to get in condition to really run," Carlisle said. "The thing that Jason Kidd does better than any point guard probably in the history of the game is push that thing ahead."

SEASON HIGHLIGHT
The Mavs locked down their eighth consecutive postseason trip with their only solid stretch against playoff contenders since adding Jason Kidd. After dropping 10 in row to winning teams, Dallas knocked off Golden State, Phoenix and Utah over a nine-day period in April. The victory over the Jazz on April 10 clinched the playoff berth.

TURNING POINT
The front office tried to find answers with the trade for Jason Kidd during the All-Star break. With less than 30 games left in the regular season to work with, the blockbuster deal didn't have the impact the team hoped. Recognized as perhaps the best pure passer in the NBA, Kidd never brought the dynamic dimension Johnson's system needed.

I like the hire. I think Avery is an insprirational coach, but I'm not sure he has enough of the X's and O's to get the Mavericks over the hump.  Now it's all about how Donnie Nelson can mold the roster this off-season.  Can he work some Magic and put the Mavs back o ...(more)

To get more respect.  I see so many posts on these boards and in blogs here that discount him over and over again.  Have the Mavs been successful in the Playoffs the past 2 years??? No but it's not all his fault.  And to call him old.  The guy is just hitting his 30's.  He's got heart, and he's not as "soft" as people keep claiming he is.  Is he a lock down ...(more)

I hope you guys don't mind me posting here (I'm a Pacers fan), but this is my take on the Mavs:

I think firing Avery Johnson was the right move, because I've always found his coaching style to be suspect.  Granted this doesn't solve all of the team's problems, but Avery certainly didn't help things t ...(more)

The Mavs may win tonight, but they will lose the series to the Hornets...Jason Kidd isn't the same player he was 5+ years years ago.

This move reminds me of the Shaq move, which was also a desperate mistake as the Spurs will go on to beat the ...(more)

Give me your opinions who you would like to see as the next HC of the Mavs.  What about Van Gundy? Rick Carlisle?

I can see that sman1965 bothers almost every team on their message board. While trash talking is fun, just seeing this guys posts makes me fell like I am back in the 3rd grade.

I am proposing a boycott of any thread he starts, and to any posts he makes on other threads as well...

Maybe he will start to talk smart sports conversation or maybe he will jus ...(more)

He is the most ridiculous owner ever. Why does he come to the games all the time? To see them lose badly in the playoffs apparently. I hate the douchebag. How did he ever buy this team. Why did he buy the team? How many other owners come to the games. He should stop coming to them because I swear he is jinxing them.

Hi Mavericks Fans,, just had to ,, let it be known that,, I heard that Avery Johnson was fired earlier this week..,, that upset me a bit.

All I have to say is Avery Johnson is perhaps one of the best coaches I have seen.,, He is not a quitter like Pat Riley or Phil Jackson,, leaves then comes back.

The Maveri ...(more)

Sorry to invade your board but I have to let this out.  I need to rub this in Jason Kidd's face.  He is a whiny little baby who when he doesn't get what he wants he cries and moans or takes games off (this seasons mysterious "migraine" before the
