Turner joins Porter, Jackson as candidates for Suns job

PHOENIX -- The Phoenix Suns will interview Houston Rockets assistant Elston Turner as a replacement for former head coach Mike D'Antoni.

The interview will be next week, the team said Friday.

Turner, 48, has been an assistant to coach Rick Adelman for 11 years with Portland, Sacramento and Houston.

Turner joins Terry Porter and Mark Jackson as candidates.

Porter, a Detroit Pistons assistant and former head coach at Milwaukee, was interviewed by Suns general manager Steve Kerr on Tuesday. The Suns were to talk with Jackson, a TV analyst and former player, on Friday.

Turner was known as a rugged defender in eight seasons as an NBA player. Improved defense is one of Kerr's goals.

Phoenix is seeking a replacement for D'Antoni, who resigned to coach the New York Knicks.

He was sort of the defense specialist in Sacramento.  Since Adelman had to change his philosophy in Houston, I'm guessing Turner was pretty important to employ their defensive strategy

Huh? Did you really watch Sacramento? Defense, yeah Peja, Webber, and Vladi D. were real stoppers. Sacramento played offense. No different in Houston (h ...(more)

I've really been quite interested to see who the new coach will be.  After looking at the replacements, two really stand out as someone who I'd like to see coach the Suns.  The First is Jerry Porter, he was a great player, someone who likes offensive but is strict on defenses and makes players accountable (which they should be, w ...(more)

I've always been a fan of Elston ever since he was a coach in Sacramento.  Seeing as how Kerr is going for a defense oriented team, Turner is a good choice.  He was sort of the defense specialist in Sacramento.  Since Adelman had to change his philosophy in Houston, I'm guessing Turner was pretty important to employ their defensive strategy.
