Redick to be in Magic's rotation: Eight months ago, a frustrated J.J. Redick asked to be traded after feeling he wouldn't ever be in the Orlando Magic's plans. On Tuesday, an upbeat Redick discovered that he might have a future with the franchise. The Magic picked up the team option on his contract, guaranteeing the third-year shooting guard a fourth season in 2009-10. Redick called the move "a vote of confidence" from the team. Then Coach Stan Van Gundy said that Redick is currently in his rotation -- and that's a first for J.J. after two seasons of sitting on the bench. "We'll see where it goes," Van Gundy said. "But if I had to play a game tomorrow, if I had to play one that meant something tomorrow, which I don't, I have three weeks . . . but if I did tomorrow, he'd be in the rotation." Redick was the first shooting guard off the bench in Monday night's preseason loss to the Atlanta Hawks, finishing with 12 points and drawing compliments from the hard-to-please coach. Fantasy Analysis
Redick is cautious, though, as he has been teased before by the promise of playing time. The Magic, who face the Charlotte Bobcats tonight at Amway Arena, don't open their regular season until Oct. 29 with a home game against the Hawks. "I hope [Van Gundy] says that on Oct. 29th. He told me that last year in China that I was going to play, but things can change quick in this league," Redick said. "I don't feel like he lied to me on that. I missed the San Antonio game because I hurt my hand and then things changed." If Van Gundy keeps to his promise, Redick could be an excellent sleeper in Rotisserie leagues. He's probably not worth drafting at this point, but he's definitely someone to keep an eye on. (Updated 10/08/2008).

Advice
Redick has struggled to work his way into the backcourt rotation and last season asked for a trade. He was the first guard off the bench in the Magic's loss to Atlanta in the preseason opener Monday, scoring 12 points, and drew praise from coach Stan Van Gundy for his play in practices. Redick, the team's first-round pick in 2006, originally signed a two-year deal with two one-year options. He's making $2.1 million this season.
