How could Detroit remove right-hander Armando Galarraga from its rotation when his 2-1 record and 3.07 ERA are unmatched by any other starter on the team?

Easy, it's going to happen.

The first tipoff came when manager Jim Leyland announced during the weekend Galarraga was not going to pitch Tuesday night as scheduled. The reason? Leyland ostensibly wanted to keep right-hander Justin Verlander on schedule instead of having his start pushed back a day by Monday's off day.

Then Detroit was rained out of its game Sunday against the New York Yankees. And guess what? Verlander is now pitching Wednesday, with lefty Nate Robertson, Sunday's starter, going Tuesday.

After Verlander, it's left-hander Kenny Rogers and righty Jeremy Bonderman.

That leaves Saturday. Dontrelle Willis is making his second rehab start Monday night for Toledo, and his next time to pitch would be -- that's right -- Saturday.

Saturday, when Detroit is in Arizona and pitchers will have to bat for themselves. It won't hurt that Willis has been one of the better hitting pitchers in baseball during his National League days.

Leyland said Willis will take Galarraga's spot when he's ready to return.

What Detroit has to decide is whether to keep Galarraga around as a reliever, or send him back to Toledo to start so he'll be ready to return at a moment's notice.

"Galarraga has been very good," Leyland said. "I really like him because he's a strike thrower. But now you're asking a guy who hasn't pitched in the bullpen to go to the bullpen."

YANKEES AT TIGERS, PPD: The game was postponed due to rain. No makeup date was announced.

Why is this guy still our pitching coach?  Does no one else feel like this is getting out of control.  Every pitcher he touches, gets worse, Verlander, Robertson and Bonderman have all gotten worse, Rodney can't even throw and we have not had one fixture in the bullpen.  Lee Mazzone is somewhere on a rocking chair in Georgia having had one of the best track records with pitcher ...(more)

Just wondering who the Tigers call up when Gary Sheffield goes on the DL. I see where Mike Hessman is doing well(.307,18HR, 31 RBI in 40 games) and Jeff Larrish ( .278, 11 HR, 33 RBI in 41 games ). In m ...(more)

Let's see who can come up with the best line that will give the true-blue, never-say-die fans some hope for the rest of the season.

Any phrase that includes the words "turn it around" will not be allowed.

Tiger pitcher Luis Marte ( whom I pointed out as a key to the future rotation ) has been promoted from A Lakeland to AA Erie over Rick Porcello. Marte ( 1.98 ERA, 41K,11BB at Class A ) will take over for Josh Rainwater who is going on the DL. It will be interesting to see how he fares as the pitchers at AA Erie have been for th ...(more)

Wow the Tigers just got swept by the Royals... AGAIN! What is up with this? You can't just falt the pitching, which has been terrible. But the hitting and not coming up with timely hits. Sure, the Tigers have hit plenty of homers this year. But it seems lik ...(more)

Why in the hell is this guy still closing for us...is it me or does he ever go 1,2,3. Always loads the bases and then gets lucky...unbelievable, sitting there watching a 6-2 lead go to 6-5 and the tying run on base...I was ready to break my tv.  I think it is time to put Cruceta in there.

If the Tigers don't turn it around by game 55 they might as well trade all the high priced garbage and go for the first pick in the draft  and bring up the rookies as the players they have now don't care if they win or loss, they got their money. As for the coaches, is it what  they are coaching or are they ...(more)

The butterflies and rainbow fans will be around for awhile....telling each other how the Tigers are just about ready to turn things around. We will be told for the 888th time that it is  a long season and anything can happen.  Then in early June, the Piston and Red Wing fans wil ...(more)

Yet another start by Justin Verlander in which he leaves the game with a big fat 0 on the run side for the Tigers. For the fifth game in his nine starts Justin Verlander departed the game with no runs from his offense. That is just pathetic.

Seems I recall Mr. Dumbrowski claiming that Francisco Cruceta was going to help out our bullpen tremendously. In fact I think he proclaimed that on a Sunday night ESPN game early in the season.

Oh well, maybe he can find another ex-Marlin to "help" us out. He seems to favor those guys.
