For the first time since Eric Wedge became manager in 2003, the Indians have decided to go with 11 pitchers instead of 12. The decision was made Sunday, and resulted in the optioning of right-hander Tom Mastny to Class AAA Buffalo and the purchasing of the contract of outfielder Jason Tyner.
Wedge said there were two reasons for the decision, the first being that the Indians' starting pitching has been so good that it's been difficult to get enough work for all of the relief pitchers.
Mastny, for example, appeared in just two games since his recall from Buffalo on April 15. Indians officials feel Mastny is a very usable relief pitcher, but he wasn't getting enough work to stay sharp. By sending him to Buffalo, Mastny can get that work, and would be just a phone call away if the Indians need another reliever later this season.
The other reason for the move, according to Wedge, is that the Indians could use another position player on the roster, and they feel Tyner can be a contributor in multiple ways.
In addition, the Indians will begin the interleague portion of their schedule Friday, with a three-game series in Cincinnati. Interleague games in National League parks mean more opportunities to use pinch hitters and pinch runners. The addition of an extra position player will give Wedge more flexibility in those games.
BLUE JAYS AT INDIANS, PPD: The game was postponed due to rain. The teams will play a traditional doubleheader Monday.

CC has already been traded and Blake seems like he's next in line with Betancourt's name being mentioned as well. But what about Byrd? I know most people would love to see him traded as he's a free agent at the end of the year and makes nearly $8M (which sadly though, isn't that much for a veteran starter these days), but nearly everyone on here says there's no w
I was just thinking, the Indians offered about $20 million annually, I know it's a little less, for CC Sabathia. So does that mean the Indians wil have 20 million to offer players in the off season? And with
As my son and I watched Casey Blake hit that 10th inning homerun last night, at first we both cheered loudly and high-fived for the Tribe...then, all kidding aside, we sort of thought about it and realized it wasn't a walk-off and that Chicago was going to come up in the bottom of the 10th. As we sat there after the
