If you're among those who recall right-hander John Smoltz saying a return to the rotation was imperative for his health, there's a reasonable explanation why Smoltz started talking about going back to the bullpen the moment he landed on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right rotator cuff and biceps muscle.

The difference is that the latest aches and pains are in his shoulder, not his elbow.

The typical wear and tear on a bullpen arm is evident in Smoltz's medical history. He's had elbow surgery four times and his right arm -- and shoulder -- has became a focal point for Atlanta.

The shoulder and biceps, Smoltz believes, are sore because of the intense work he put in developing and harnessing a changeup in spring training.

Using Smoltz at the back end of the bullpen could be a best-case scenario for the Braves, too. Injuries have piled up and incumbent closer Rafael Soriano remains slowed by arm issues. While the rotation options are limited and replacing Smoltz won't be easy, shifting him back to the closer's role could aid the team's late-inning woes.

Hello again everybody. Welcome to the game thread for the rubber match between the Atlanta Braves (20-19) and the Philadelphia Phillies (22-19). Philadelphia used a mid-game rally to win the first game on Tuesday 5-4 and Atlanta used a barrage of homers off starter ...(more)

That's 2! Seriously though, that was a great game. Solid pitching, nice bullpen work, and a few clutch hits. I'd like to see that more often.

(POLL) Simple enough, do you think Chipper Jones can end the season hitting .400 thus being the first player since Ted Williams to have a season of .400 ball?  Personally I doubt he will be hitting .400 by the all star break but I was curious as to what everyone else thinks...

Yes!!! I get a game on Peachtree TV tonight. First game in two weeks on that stupid channel. Lucky we got to watch Cop Land the other night. God!!! I live in Canada and without a satellite dish all I got is Peachtree. We better win at least 2 of the 3 this weekend, I think it's about time we move up to the top of the division. I think once Smoltz comes back to the bullpen and ...(more)

Question #1:  Of you were a pitcher in the NL, how would you pitch to Chipper Jones?   Wow, he hits everything everywhere!!! Wow what a great year he has started.

Question #2:  How many more times will the great sports writers tell us that Glavine pitched for the

Other than Jair Jurrjens, I would have to say that Mark Kotsay was the biggest pick-up of the offseason. I know just a few weeks ago I was saying that Joey Devine would be nice in the bullpen ...(more)

Ok,  We're officially 1/4 of the way through the season - well at the middle of the 5th inning tonight I guess will be officially 1/4 but ...

So time for a bit of an evaluation I believe.  First a quick positive / negative area, then some grades.  I'll start with the negatives and get them out of the way.

Negatives for this season so far ...(more)

Maybe I'm a spoiled Braves fan but this guy isn't getting it done anymore. We never bunt runners over (which if your hitting leadoff get the can you please get a bunt down Kelly; you're hitting .260), we leave pitchers in to long and we can't win a one-run game. Not to mention the fact that we have a different lineu ...(more)
