$118 million payroll, 101 losses. That's a lot of suck for their buck ... Simple declarative sentences are for simple declarative people, but the Mariners are an atrociously run organization with little hope of winning until 2011. 'Nuff said.

If there's a better way to proclaim 'we have no respect for our fans or ourselves' than with an effort-free 0-11 September road trip, I'd like to hear it. Maybe by announcing a jump in ticket prices for next season?

Reason No. 3,744 not to remove the "interim" from Jim Riggleman's job title: He used Miguel Cairo as a pinch-hitter in a pivotal situation last week when he had other options. The little things count, in baseball as in microchip construction. ... Ichiro will likely top 200 hits for the eighth straight season. Whoopie-doo-ding-dong. ... Quote of the week, courtesy of Riggleman: "If there is someone in this league who is 30 games better than us, I'll kiss your behind on Main Street and give you half an hour to draw a crowd."

Fine first start for Brandon Morrow, who out-Joba'd the Yankees on Friday ... If we're going to continue to hype "Matt Stairs, Professional Hitter," then from now on I'm referring to Raul Ibanez as "The True Professional's Professional Hitter."

Barring another Adrian Beltre cycle (unlikely), a triple play (unlikely), a no-hitter (possible if King Felix is on the hill) or a bullpen prank gone awry that leaves R.A. Dickey suspended from the Space Needle by the too-elastic band of his trunks (hey, you never know), I doubt we're seeing too many more Mariners/Rangers highlights on the national sportscasts this week ... They swept the Indians, who'd just rattled off 10 straight wins, so maybe some respect is in order. On second thought, nah.

I spent a legitimate four minutes -- or roughly 3.997 more than most fans have devoted to the Mariners in the last month -- trying to decide whether they should be ranked below or above the Padres. Both have one ace pitcher and one above-average positional player, both seem incapable of developing young regulars, and both have quit on their current skippers. The Mariners ultimately get the nod because they play in the tougher American League. That rare glimpse into my highly technical thought process comes free of charge, by the way.

Your 2008 Seattle Mariners, in a single stat: R.A. Dickey tied a major league record with four wild pitches in the fifth inning Sunday. Then Mariners pitchers followed up with three more Monday. Nice.
08/12/20082929
Carlos Silva called out the team's hitters the other day, so at least the Mariners are getting some yippy leadership for the $48 million they invested in him. ... They've finally cut Jose Vidro and placed Kenji Johjima in the witness protection program, which frees regular at-bats (at least in theory) for Jeff Clement and Wladimir Balentien. They'll still suck, but at least they'll suck with hope and youthful vigor.

A few more starts like Friday's -– nine hits and four walks in 4 2/3 innings -– and Jarrod Washburn will be more punchline than trade bait. ... The talented Brandon Morrow belongs in the starting rotation for the same reason Joba Chamberlain does: 175 innings, or whatever he'll throw as a 24-year-old starter, is more than the 70 he'll log in the 'pen. 175 is more than 70. Math isn't hard.
07/29/20083029
I humbly propose that games against the Mariners shouldn't count in the standings. ... How about this: Raul Ibanez to the D-Backs or Mets, Arthur Rhodes to the Marlins or Cardinals, Jarrod Washburn to anyone who will swallow the millions left on his contract, and the six remaining major-league-caliber players on the 40-man roster to Mama's Mexican Kitchen, which is my favorite taco joint in Seattle. Tell 'em Uncle Larry sent you.

Until they traded for Erik Bedard, we wouldn't have given them much of a chance to be in top half of baseball. But you have to like the top of their rotation, especially with burgeoning star Felix Hernandez, and how they are going with pitching and defense as their model in a park suited for it.
