They scored the fewest runs (3.9 per game) and had the lowest on-base percentage (.319) in the NL ... On one hand, Kevin Towers & Co. know how to tailor a roster to the spacious confines of their ballpark (knuckleballer Charlie Haeger could not possibly have found a better home). On the other, the Padres plan to cut payroll -- owner John Moores' soon-to-be ex-wife is about to drain his bank account -- and have few high-ceiling regulars in their midst. Right now, they look to be short three starters, three relievers, a catcher, a second baseman and a left fielder.

Dude, they DOMINATED the Nationals. Didja see it? Oh man -- they ripped apart the bad boys from D.C. like Marlon Brando going to town on a two-pound lobster. Whooo! ... Jody Gerut's having a nice little season after being out of the bigs for the past few years, yet nobody's yapping about how he's a Hamilton-esque or neo-Ankiel-ian 'great story.' It serves him right for not having abused drugs or lost the strike zone along the way, I suppose. A 'great story' demands a great backstory.

Padres/Nationals this weekend, baby!!! Three games!!! ... No, really, what do you think it would take to prompt a baseball casualist to attend a game in that series? Great weather, obviously. Free seats, beer, hot dogs and parking are a given. Maybe MLB can work with local authorities to allow attendance to count toward the fulfillment of community-service commitments?

This isn't to diminish Chris Young's performance Sunday, as near-perfect-games don't come 'round every day. But mostly it looked like he was throwing strikes and the Brewers were hitting the ball in the vicinity of Padres fielders. Pitching really isn't that complicated. ... Of the just-promoted kids, Will Venable looks good and Matt Antonelli looks bad. To summarize: Venable, good. Antonelli, bad.

Nice work sweeping the D-Backs, but it isn't like they took down a Senator or a fire-spewing dragon or anything ... It's possible -- not likely, but possible -- that Luis Rodriguez is an upgrade on Khalil Greene at shortstop ... Adrian Gonzalez has stopped hitting homers ... Trevor Hoffman is still alive ... Is there anything I missed?

Barring a serious September resurgence, Bud Black doesn't survive this disaster. Remember how everybody thought he'd be the first former pitching coach to ace the manager exam in quite some time? Yeah, not so much.

Alarming line from Sunday's San Diego Union-Tribune: "... a Padres executive painted a stark fiscal picture for 2009, saying club owner John Moores might shrink the payroll to $40 million." That's not a lot, especially when Jake Peavy and Khalil Greene eat up $14.5 million of that sum. Save your cards and letters; I know that Peavy's worth it. ... First Greg Maddux vetoes a deal, and now Brian Giles. Everything they say about the quality of life in San Diego must be true, and then some.

The Padres might actually have improved when Khalil Greene (.213/.260/.339) went all Kevin Brown on a clubhouse storage chest and broke his hand. ... I don't root for statistical milestones, but I would L-U-V luv luv luv to see Greg Maddux get the three wins he needs to pass Roger Clemens on the all-time list. It just seems right, is all.

The Padres have scored 6, 9, 3 and 8 runs, for a total of 26, in winning their past four games. I'm just sayin'. ... The Padres are as watchable as a fourth-generation reality-dance-contest knockoff (proposed title: You Can Dance if You Want to), but do try and tune in whenever Greg Maddux pitches. You're going to miss him when he's gone.

They didn't add enough offense to a team that couldn't hold off the D-Backs and Rockies a year ago. They have potential, though -- perhaps Chase Headley and/or Matt Antonelli break out? -- and any team with a front end featuring Jake Peavy and Chris Young won't be far from contention.
