    News
The Sports Xchange notes that Geoff Jenkins, a left-handed hitter, rarely starts against left-handed pitchers, and with the Phillies facing five straight lefties through Friday night, he had not been in the lineup since May 10 in San Francisco. He also received only one pinch hit at-bat. So pardon Jenkins if he feels like a forgotten man. "I've been to Pittsburgh, where it's been lefty, lefty, righty, lefty during a four-game set, but nothing like this," he said, a grin creeping across his face. "Five in a row, that's never happened. We're going through a little barrage of lefties here. You want to be out there, but it's just one of those weird parts of the season."

    News
The Sports Xchange notes that Ryan Howard extended his hitting streak to eight games with a third-inning single Friday against Toronto and appears to be emerging from the worst slump of his career, a malaise that caused him to get booed during the Phillies' last homestand. "I can't control that," said Howard, batting .290 (9-for-31) with three homers during the streak. "It bothers you a little bit. First off, I think the competitive nature in yourself, you want to go out there and get the job done. It definitely doesn't help when the fans kind of get on you, but at the same time, that's what happens when you sign a permission slip to play in Philly. You know how the fans are. If you don't go out there and perform, you know how the fans are going to be."

    News
The Sports Xchange notes that Chris Coste went 1-for-4 Friday against Toronto, giving him eight hits over his last 17 at-bats -- all with his unorthodox swing. Coste said he developed the lunging swing during the mid-1990s by playing fast-pitch softball after finishing his college season at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. "I played on some national, actually world, championship teams," said Coste, a shortstop on a Fargo, N.D.-based team. "When you play at that level, you've got to be ready to hit because that ball is flying in at you from 45 feet away or whatever." Coste said he faced the top five pitchers in the world in one season.

Feliz jumped on the first pitch he saw from James to start the second and parked the pitch into the left-center stands. Feliz almost homered to left again in the third, but the ball bounced off the top of the wall. He settled for a deep RBI single. Feliz finished 2-for-4.

Cole Hamels finally finished what he started. The Philadelphia left-hander pitched his first career shutout, and the Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 5-0 on Thursday night. "I'm always wanting to go out there and finish it," said Hamels, who lowered his ERA from 3.36 to 2.89. "It was nice to finally get that done." Hamels (5-3) gave up just four hits, struck out six and walked two in his first complete game of the season. Only two runners reached second base against Hamels, who has lasted at least seven innings in eight of his nine starts this season. Hamels retired 15 batters in a row between the first and sixth innings. "I'm happy because all along I've said sooner or later he was going to throw a shutout and close out the game," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.

The Braves teed off on Phillies SP Brett Myers (2-4) during a 8-6 win Wednesday against Philadelphia. Yunel Escobar led off with a home run and Chipper Jones hit an opposite-field drive one batter later to make it 2-0. Kelly Johnson connected in the second and Brian McCann's two-run double in the third put the Braves ahead 5-0. Myers left to a chorus of boos in the fifth, and sat by himself in the dugout. He allowed eight runs (six earned) and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out six.

    News
Phillies OF Jayson Werth could not remember ever being this productive in a game -- that's including Little League. Werth homered in his first three at-bats and tied a Phillies record with eight RBI in a 10-3 win over Blue Jays on Friday night. "Anything can happen on any given day, I guess," Werth said. "This game is crazy. It's not like I was trying to do anything like that. It just happened. I don't know what else to say. It's just crazy." Werth hit an 0-1 pitch off Blue Jays starter David Purcey for a three-run home run to right field in the second inning and topped that with a 425-foot grand slam to right on a 3-1 pitch against Purcey (0-1) in the third. Werth then ripped a solo shot to left-center in the fifth off reliever Jesse Litsch on a 2-1 pitch for a 9-2 lead.
