Tigers SP Armando Galarraga kept the hosting Diamondbacks at bay Saturday, allowing two runs and one hit in six-plus innings to pick up his third win. Galarraga walked two of the first three men he faced but escaped by retiring Conor Jackson on a liner to short and Justin Upton on a pop to second. He tired in the seventh, walking Upton and Mark Reynolds to open the inning. Manager Jim Leyland lifted Galarraga, who threw 111 pitches, 23 more than his previous high. He walked five and struck out three.

    News
Luke Hochevar pitched six strong innings and Joey Gathright drove in the only runs, helping the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 2-0 on Wednesday and hand Justin Verlander his seventh loss. Verlander (1-7) lost for the first time in 10 career starts against the Royals. He had been 6-0 with a 2.65 ERA against Kansas City and put in another solid performance, leaving after six-plus innings. Verlander allowed just two runs on six hits -- five of them single -- with three walks and three strikeouts. The Royals loaded the bases with one out in the second, and Gathright hit an opposite field single to score Mark Teahen and John Buck. It was Verlander's only mistake Wednesday.

    News
The Sports Xchange reports that manager Jim Leyland held Sheffield out of the lineup Wednesday night at Kansas City and said when Sheffield returns Thursday it will be as Detroit's designated hitter. And that's how it will remain, with one interleague exception. Leyland said. However, Leyland will have Sheffield in left field for one of the three interleague contests in Arizona this weekend. Expect Matt Joyce to see the starts in left field for the time being. He started and hit his third home run of the season Thursday.
