Deadline-deal analysis

SportsLine.com's Charlie McCarthy analyzes all the deals made before the July 31 non-waivers deadline:

Deadline Deals
Red Sox trade SS Nomar Garciaparra, OF Matt Murton and cash to the Cubs; the Expos trade Orlando Cabrera to the Red Sox; the Twins trade Doug Mientkiewicz to the Red Sox; the Cubs trade Alex Gonzalez, RHP Francis Beltran and IF Brendan Harris to the Expos and LHP Justin Jones to the Twins

Nomar Garciaparra
The Red Sox deal Garciaparra, who has been unhappy since the offseason and is eligible to become a free agent after the season. Although he can't match Nomar's offensive production, free-agent-to-be Cabrera gives Boston a fine all-around shortstop. Mientkiewicz is a great defensive first baseman. The Cubs add Nomar's bat to an already potent lineup. The Twins fail to get a much-desired starting pitcher.
Cubs   Edge-0-Meter  Red Sox
Diamondbacks trade CF Steve Finley, C Brent Mayne to the Dodgers for C Koyie Hill, OF Reggie Abercrombie, LHP Bill Murphy

Steve Finley
The Dodgers beat out the Padres to acquire Finley, who agreed to the trade at the deadline. Abercrombie is considered a five-tool player who lacks plate discipline. Hill is a switch-hitter who converted to catching from third base. Murphy had been acquired by L.A. from Florida a day earlier. Arizona could re-sign Finley after the season.
Diamondbacks   Edge-0-Meter  Dodgers
White Sox trade RHP Esteban Loaiza to the Yankees for Jose Contreras

Esteban Loaiza
The Yankees acquire the runner-up in last year's AL Cy Young Award voting in exchange for the inconsistent Contreras. Loaiza, who will be a free agent after the season, bolsters a New York rotation that has had to deal with injuries to Mike Mussina and Kevin Brown this season.
White Sox   Edge-0-Meter  Yankees
Dodgers trade OF Juan Encarnacion, C Paul Lo Duca, RHP Guillermo Mota to the Marlins for 1B Hee Seop Choi, RHP Brad Penny, LHP Bill Murphy

Brad Penny
The Marlins fill two big holes: catcher and setup reliever. They had been after Lo Duca for a long time, and Mota should help get to closer Armando Benitez. The Dodgers get a starter in Penny, who despite being mentioned as a possible piece in a trade for Randy Johnson will remain in L.A. The deal also allows the Dodgers to move Shawn Green back to right field and add a first baseman (Choi) with power.
Dodgers   Edge-0-Meter  Marlins
Devil Rays trade RHP Victor Zambrano, RHP Bartolome Fortunato to the Mets for LHP Scott Kazmir, RHP Jose Diaz

Victor Zambrano
The Mets give up on top pitching prospect Kazmir to acquire Zambrano, who led the D-Rays in wins -- but also the majors in walks. New York undoubtedly hopes pitching guru Rick Peterson can harness the 28-year-old right-hander. Kazmir, a first-round pick in 2002, has struck out 259 batters in 203.1 minor-league innings.
Devil Rays   Edge-0-Meter  Mets
Mets trade 2B/3B Ty Wigginton, IF Jose Bautista, RHP Matt Peterson to the Pirates for RHP Kris Benson, IF Jeff Keppinger

Kris Benson
Benson was the most sought after pitcher on the market -- following Randy Johnson, that is. The Mets hope Benson, who's eligible for free agency after this season, can give them a late push. The Mets acquired Bautista from K.C. for C Justin Huber.
Mets   Edge-0-Meter  Pirates
Giants trade RHP Felix Rodriguez to the Phillies for OF Ricky Ledee, RHP Alfredo Simon

Felix Rodriguez
With closer Billy Wagner on the DL, the Phillies needed bullpen help. They acquire a solid setup man in Rodriguez. With Ledee, the Giants add much-needed depth to their outfield. They also are intrigued by Simon.
Giants   Edge-0-Meter  Phillies

Other deals:

  • Dodgers trade OF Dave Roberts to the Red Sox for OF Henri Stanley
  • Mets trade RHP Scott Erickson to the Rangers for a player to be named later
  • Dodgers trade RHP Tom Martin to the Braves for LHP Matt Merricks
  • Marlins trade OF Abraham Nunez to the Royals for RHP Rudy Seanez
  • Padres trade RHP Ismael Valdez to the Marlins for RHP Travis Chick
  • Mariners trade Dave Hansen to the Padres for minor league pitcher Jon Huber
  • Reds trade RHP Todd Jones and minor league OF Brad Correll to the Phillies for RHP Josh Hancock and minor league SS Anderson Machado
