Yankees' Hawkins suspended three games, plans to appeal

NEW YORK -- New York Yankees pitcher LaTroy Hawkins was suspended for three games and fined $2,000 Thursday by Major League Baseball, which said he intentionally threw at Baltimore's Luke Scott.

Hawkins asked the players association to appeal, and the suspension will be delayed until the appeal is resolved or dropped. The penalty had been set to begin Thursday, when the Yankees hosted the Orioles.

Earlier this month, Yankees reliever Kyle Farnsworth had his the three-game suspension for throwing behind Boston's Manny Ramirez reduced to one game by baseball executive vice president John McHale Jr., who reviewed the decision by vice president Bob Watson. Hawkins hoped to get a similar result.

"I should, I don't know why not," Hawkins said.

In the sixth inning at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night, Hawkins threw an inside pitch to Scott, then threw the next one over Scott's head and was ejected without warning by plate umpire Chuck Meriwether. Scott and Hawkins began gesturing at each other, and both benches and bullpens emptied as players spilled onto the field. No punches were thrown.

"Obviously, it's no fun if you're the guy who gets drilled, but I understand the rules of baseball and the idea of protecting your players," Scott said. "That first pitch, I understand that. But any time you come up around a guy's head, that's wrong."

Earlier in the game, with the Orioles leading 9-0 in the third inning, Baltimore pitcher Daniel Cabrera hit Derek Jeter on the left hand with a pitch.

Hawkins is 1-0 with a 5.57 ERA in 17 games in his first season with the Yankees. He has not hit a batter in 21 innings.

"I was a little bit surprised" that Hawkins drew a three-game penalty, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Guys have been throwing inside for a long time. I think you're trying to set a precedent where no one gets hurt badly."

This dude gets on my nerves the way hes playin. If you cant hit a guy, let alone miss twice in a row you should be suspended regardless if there was a brawl of not! How dare he think he cant take Paulie O's number, even for 2 weeks!

Since Hawkins had two chances to hit him, and didn't, the Yankees should fine him $10,000 for lack of testicular fortitude.

How in the world do we get two pansies like Hawkins and Farnsworthless on this team. Pathetic.

This jerk has thrown at batters all his career. His temper gets the best of him and he starts trying to scare batters. it is a shame he doesn't have to bat and get paybacks right on his hands. he has injured several batters and is due for a big suspension and a 50.000.00 fine.

Juan Marichial had the same temper tantrum problem.

He spends that on crack.  Give me a break.  It was intentional and no matter the suspension or the $$, it's not enough.  Players get put on the DL with 90mph heaters in the ribs/wrist/fingers or worse.  Another great job by MLB.

Why is the anti ny sentiment so blantant in the world of sports? why is it that Jeter can get hit 50 times a year and no one gets suspended? but when a yankee pitcher does it the world has to come to an end....is it the sports worlds attempt at keeping the greatest city down???!!!

Jeter likes to dive down into pitches that is why he is such a good right field hitter. I am sick of people saying that Cabrera hit him.  Cabrera had a 10-0 lead going into the 3rd why would he throw at Jeter. He had nasty stuff that night one just got away from him. It is Jeters job to get out of the way and he didn't
