Man dies from injuries in fall at Turner Field

ATLANTA -- Alcohol was a factor in the death of a 25-year-old man who fell down a stairwell at Turner Field during the game between the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets.

Justin Hayes of Cumming, Ga., suffered head injuries Wednesday night and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. He fell about 150 feet from the club level to the landing on the field level during the eighth inning.

The investigation is "pointing toward drinking. Alcohol was a factor," said Atlanta police department spokesman Ronald Campbell on Thursday.

Campbell said Hayes may have been sliding down the hand rails when he fell.

"We are still waiting for the police report to be completed," Campbell said. "We had officers working at the game."

Mark Guilbeau, the senior investigator with the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office, said an autopsy will be performed.

The Braves issued a statement Thursday expressing sympathy for Hayes' family.

"The Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Police Department are investigating the tragic accident that resulted in the death of a 25-year old male fan at last night's game," the statement said. "Our sincerest and heartfelt condolences go out to his family."

Braves spokeswoman Beth Marshall said the team had no additional comment pending the investigation.

Turner Field, built for the 1996 Olympics, has been the Braves' home stadium since 1997. The Braves said it's the first non-medical fatality at the stadium.

Gotta give Charels Darwin credit here, this is simply natural selection at work.  What else can it be attributed to?  Getting drunk, then wanting to slide down a stair rail that is elevated 150 off the ground only to slip and then fall to your death.  The human race just got healthier, one of the slow pack members just got culled.

This is the 2nd guy I have heard about this MLB season that has plummeted to his death at a ball game. (Both at Mets games)  Did anyone hear the outcome of the autopsy of the fan who died at Shea earlier this season?  I am curious if these guys are getting boozed up and then sliding down the rails?

I am extremely sorry for his family but...

You gotta give it up for where this guy is from. Cumming, GA.

I have a shirt that says Cumming, GA "half the fun it getting there."

Never really thought it existed but I gues it does.

Is it really worth dying for to be a show off?

Cause of death? You mean, besides death from impact of falling 150 ft? My condolences to the family. There was a guy who fell in New York, probably the same way, off the winding staircases. Be careful out there...
