A forecast calling for steady rain left little mystery about thefate of Monday night's series opener against Pittsburgh, which wascalled off by about 5:30 p.m. Though the Pirates were not scheduledto return to Shea Stadium after this series, they'll have to make aspecial one-day visit for a makeup game Aug. 11 at 1:10 p.m.
Tickets for Monday night's game will be honored Aug. 11. As forthe pregame celebration to honor former Jets who played at Shea Stadium, there has been no makeup date announced, though the eventwill be rescheduled.
Alou delayed
The rain also affected Mets left fielder Moises Alou, whosetravel plans to New York were delayed, which meant he had not hadthe scheduled MRI of his left ankle by the time the Mets' game wascalled off. The 41-year-old Alou was close to coming off hisseasonlong disabled list stint (because of hernia surgery) when theteam disclosed an ankle injury, which is suspected to be a hairlinefracture.
Schneider due back
Mets general manager Omar Minaya said catcher Brian Schneider wasdue to be released from the hospital either late Monday or today andcould be ready to play as soon as tonight's game against thePirates. Schneider has been treated with intravenous antibiotics foran infection on his thumb, one Minaya insisted was not a staphinfection but rather began as a blister.
Rotating the rotation
Monday night starter Johan Santana is scheduled to pitchtonight's game against Pittsburgh, followed by Oliver Perez onWednesday. The Mets are off Thursday, and announced their pitchingrotation for a weekend series in Arizona as John Maine, Mike Pelfreyand Santana. That means Nelson Figueroa will be skipped this timearound.
