Short Hops: Big Papi's Big Pain has Red Sox in a predicament

DETROIT -- Don't underestimate Big Papi's Big Pain. David Ortiz's right knee is hurting. Bad.

Like, he might have to miss more time this season than usual.

"I think so," he said Thursday. "Probably."

How much more time, he doesn't know. He hopes to avoid any prolonged absences. But the tendinitis in his right knee, which he aggravated while diving into first base in Tampa Bay on April 25, is not going away. It's worse some days than others. Thursday, as the Red Sox faced Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers, was particularly bad.

"It's killing me," he said before the game.

Boston's designated hitter and all-around good guy hasn't played in fewer than 149 games since 2003, his debut season in the Hub and the summer he emerged into Big Papi after earlier being simply just a guy the Sox claimed off waivers from Minnesota.

The 149 came last year, when he battled a sore right knee that required surgery following Boston's World Series win.

Though he wasn't completely back to 100 percent this spring, Ortiz seemed well on his way. But, "the doctor said it will take some time because I'm a big man," Boston's Big Man said.

It's a delicate balance for Boston manager Terry Francona, because things obviously are better for the Sox with Ortiz in the daily lineup -- though if that leads to time on the shelf, then it's a price that could sting the Red Sox in the long run.

How often does Francona check with Ortiz on his knee?

"Every couple of hours," the Boston skipper quipped.

Seriously, the two have developed a little-noticed routine that actually is played out partly in public after each Red Sox victory.

"When we're shaking hands, we always have a brief conversation about the next day," Francona said. "If the conversation needs to go further, it will."

The Boston Red Sox are loaded with talent and most importantly they are loaded with good pitching. Ortiz who is a big part of their offense needs to be healthy to assure the Red Sox's chances in October. Why risk further injury to such a great talent when they can win probably enough games without him to command first place in their division. A 15 to 20 day rest would probably solve the problem an ...(more)

We all know why the sox walked away scot free from mitchell report.....everyone used to say look at bonds 10 years ago and look at him now....let's do the same for Ortiz....body breaking down the same way....he got considerably larger....yes even his head.....but noone wants to point at him cause he's so bubbly!!!!!!!  Whatever it is....he's a one dimentional player....period......he is only ...(more)

Lose some weight you fat bastard...there is no doubt that Papi's weight is causing him more pain.  If were to drop 15-20 lbs. the pain would subside enough for him to be productive again.

Given their bench the Red Sox should rest him and put Youk in the 3 spot.  He is tearing it up right now and you still have Crisp, Ellsbury platooning in center so one of them could take Youk's spot in the batting order.

I know they don't bring the power of an Ortiz but the possiblity of not having Ortiz in the playoffs because they failed to let his k ...(more)

David Ortiz symbolizes everything that is wrong with baseball.  He sits on his arse and gets up every now and then to take a couple of swings.

Make him play the field!

Hey Boston,  If you have had time to quit ripping on Ortiz you would know Griffey wants out of Cincy in a bad way. I know we sent you Willie Mo and sorry about that, but Arroyo aand his guitar are killing us right now.  You could have Griff for a prospect right now and he has enough tread on the tire to help deep into the post season. The guy is perfect for Fenway. Just make an offer. ...(more)

i think in all honesty, that francona may have just been handed a golden ticket out of his OF platoon situation.

cuz now with big papi in big pain they can sit him and get his knee better, first for a couple weeks and then its interleague time, so he would be able to sit out some more games anyways, and while he is out they can simply move manny to the DH, and can start ellsbury everyda ...(more)

Why are the BoSox willing to risk their post-season by not resting their key players as they need it during the season? Their record is good enough where they can sustain losing an extra game here and there and still get to the post-season.

If they lose Papi or Manny, that lethal pop in the middle of the line-up isn't quite the same without the protection of the complimentary pl

first off, look at Big Papi....he is big, in the little bit overweight category....not big as in musclebound. If I recall, he was the same size when he was in Minnesota. For all those DH haters, he can play a decent 1B, they just don't need him to until interleague play, because Boston already has the best defensive 1B in the league in Youkilis. Saying Ortiz is on roids makes no more sense then sa ...(more)

now first things first screw the roids business, if you all truly believe that shootin up will turn you from nobody to one of the greatest your watching the wrong sport. hello football is probably the only sport that benefits from it. second of all i hate ortiz, but what made him good was the players around him he wouldnt be that good if he was on the royals. if he is taking roids so what its his ...(more)
