Forget about the big matchup between Big Z and the Big Unit. The Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks held Carlos Zambrano and Randy Johnson out of Sunday's game because of heavy rain, strong winds and temperatures in the 40s in Chicago. Instead, the Cubs' Sean Gallagher was to make his first start of the season, with Edgar Gonzalez taking the mound for the Diamondbacks, who were trying to avoid a three-game sweep. Johnson is now scheduled to pitch the opener of a three-game home series against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday. Micah Owings will pitch Wednesday and Brandon Webb will go on Thursday. Fantasy Analysis
Johnson, who had offseason back surgery, is 2-1 with a 5.06 ERA this season but has a 12-0 career record against the Cubs. He has won two of his last three starts, but has also allowed 10 earned runs in 10 innings. The best news for Johnson and Fantasy owners is that the veteran hurler still has 28 strikeouts in 26 2/3 innings. Johnson is no longer a must-start Fantasy SP, but is a viable No. 5 guy in mixed leagues starting for the contending Diamondbacks. Johnson is now a two-start pitcher Fantasy Week 7 (May 12-18) with his second start coming against the Tigers. (Updated 05/11/2008).
Because of rain in Chicago, Johnson has been pushed back from his original scheduled Sunday start according to the Diamondbacks' official Web site. (Updated 05/11/2008)
Advice
The Diamondbacks are being cautious with Johnson after he's had two surgeries on his back in as many years. He is 2-1 with a 5.06 ERA in five starts this season.
