The Sports Xchange reports that Phillies RP Scott Mathieson will undergo a third surgery in a timeframe of less than three years Thursday. Renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews will scope Mathieson's elbow to determine the severity of the damage to the ulnar collateral ligament, but he "most likely" will have to perform Tommy John surgery, Phillies athletic trainer Scott Sheridan said Saturday. "I'll wake up, and I'll either be out four to six weeks or a year," Mathieson said by phone. "It's going to be really minor or it's going to suck." (Updated 05/12/2008).
Injury Report
Elbow - 15-day DL. Out until at least early June (Updated - 4/29/08)
Fantasy Analysis
If Mathieson has to undergo Tommy John surgery, you can forget about him coming back this season and he will probably miss a portion of next year, too. Mathieson barely remains a prospect, and isn't worth owning in any formats at this point. (Updated 05/12/2008).
Mathieson, who is still recovering from right elbow surgery, may have yet another surgery performed on his throwing elbow according to the Philadelphia Daily News. (Updated 05/06/2008)
Advice
Mathieson recently had an MRI, and the Phillies are awaiting the decision of three different doctors. Mathieson, who had Tommy John surgery in September 2006 and an ulnar nerve transposition last September, hasn't pitched in the majors since 2006 - his only season in the majors.
