Against a lineup missing Carlos Gomez (flu) and Joe Mauer (rest), Dustin McGowan threw 94 pitches Thursday at Minnesota before giving up a hit. He walked five and hit a batter and allowed Minnesota's first run on a wild pitch. McGowan kept the game close -- but couldn't find the plate. He struck out three and allowed just two hits, but was removed after five. (Updated 05/15/2008).

Fantasy Analysis
In the fifth, Jason Frasor and Brian Tallet warmed up while a no-hitter was still intact. The bid ended on a one-out single by Brendan Harris. The walks inflated his pitch count and did not allow him to work deep into the game despite what was otherwise a decent outing for him. He was coming off an outing in which he allowed nine earned runs, so this has to be considered a big improvement. He's been up-and-down this season, but is still worth using as a No. 4 or 5 starter in mixed leagues when the matchups are right. His next start comes May 22 against a solid Angels lineup, so it's best to keep him active mostly just in AL-only leagues for that one. (Updated 05/15/2008).
McGowan turned in his shortest outing of the season as the visiting Blue Jays fell, 12-0, to Cleveland on Saturday. (Updated 05/11/2008)
Advice
McGowan gave up nine hits and nine runs over 3 2-3 innings, becoming the first Blue Jays starter to fail to work at least six innings in 15 games since he tossed just four innings in an April 24 loss at Tampa Bay. The right-hander had allowed only one run and eight hits over 14 2-3 innings in his previous two starts. McGowan fell to 2-3 with a 4.47 ERA in eight starts this season. He also dropped to 5-13 in 34 career road appearances.
