Reds' Gonzo has year-ending surgery: Reds shortstop Alex Gonzalez had surgery on his left knee Monday, ending his season before he got to play a single game. The 31-year-old Gonzalez sustained a compression fracture at the start of spring training in February. Cincinnati signed Gonzalez to a $14 million, three-year deal before last season. He missed 28 games in 2007 while attending to his ailing son and ended up batting .272 with 16 homers and 55 RBI. Reds outfielder Norris Hopper is scheduled for surgery Tuesday to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow. (Updated 07/07/2008).
Injury Report
Knee - 60-day DL. Out for the season (Updated - 7/5/08)
Fantasy Analysis
Team medical director Dr. Timothy Kremcheck performed the one-hour surgery and said Gonzalez could be ready for spring training next year. He can be cut and ignored in all Fantasy leagues now, especially since he is no certainty to be a starter in the big leagues again. (Updated 07/07/2008).
