A's Smith loses third in last four: A's SP Greg Smith (5-9) allowed four runs on five hits over six innings Wednesday as he lost for the third time in his last four starts when Oakland fell 4-3 to the Rays. Smith, who struck out four and walked two, was cruising along until he allowed back-to-back homers to Jonny Gomes and Ben Zobrist in the bottom of the fifth inning. (Updated 07/23/2008).

Fantasy Analysis
Apart from his poor outing on the 18th when he lasted only 3 2/3 innings, Smith hasn't been pitching horribly in July, but he just doesn't go deep enough games to keep his ERA below six this month. His overall ERA remains a solid 3.90, but he just isn't getting enough offensive help to be worth using in regular mixed leagues right now. In Fantasy Week 18 (July 28-Aug. 3), Smith will get one start on Tuesday vs. the Royals. (Updated 07/23/2008).
