ATLANTA -- Braves manager Bobby Cox wasn't able to put Yunel Escobar at the top of his lineup card for Wednesday night's game against the Mets. If he's without his shortstop for a few more days, there's a chance Mets right fielder Ryan Church will draw even more of his ire.

Church's aggressive attempt to break up the double play that concluded the Braves' doubleheader sweep at Turner Field on Tuesday led to him suffering his second head injury in the past three months.

At the same time, Escobar suffered a badly bruised right leg that was causing him to continue limping badly when he arrived at Turner Field late on Wednesday afternoon.

"Not good," Escobar responded after being asked how he felt.

While Cox is hopeful that Escobar will return on Thursday, the 26-year-old Cuban shortstop wasn't as confident that he'd be healthy enough to play that soon.

"It's not up to me," Escobar said, with Brayan Pena serving as an interpreter. "It depends on the way my knee feels. I've put a lot of ice on it and I feel better every time that I do that."

Escobar's discomfort is located just below his right knee, which is where he made contact with Church's forehead.

With his team trailing by four runs, Church slid late, causing Escobar to make an acrobatic leap while making the throw. As the Mets right fielder moved toward the bag, his head collided with the Braves shortstop's leg.

Church's head hit the dirt and he remained motionless with his face on the ground for about three minutes. While concerned about his health, Cox was among the Braves who thought this slide was dirty.

"The slide was extremely late," Cox said. "You have to slide before you get to the bag, not after you get even with it. I don't know if he got his stride messed up or what."

Escobar wasn't as upset about the ninth-inning slide that put an odd end to the long doubleheader.

"I'm used to it," Escobar said. "Back in my land [Cuba], that's the way people would slide. I was expecting him to slide hard because he did it before. It's just baseball. Four innings earlier, while trying to prevent a double play, Church performed an early pop-up slide. As he came up in front of second base, he raised his arm in attempt to alter Escobar's throw.

"I didn't think much about that one, it was a little late," Cox said in reference to this slide which caused Escobar to feel some discomfort in his left quadriceps muscle.

Without Escobar, who has seven hits in his past 13 at-bats, the Braves used Omar Infante as their starting shortstop and leadoff hitter on Wednesday.

i was thinking the same thing last night when i saw the play but i didn't want to say anything b/c it look like ryan church got the worst of the collision

but since bobby is talking about it i guess i can too.......it wasn't so much the slide that made me mad but the situation in which it was done. the ball was hit fairly hard so it was gonna be a pretty easy turn so why make that slide? the game was practically over and there was about a 99% chance that escobar was gonna make that turn. I did not agree with the fact that he slid so hard when the game was over

While we are at it, could somebody explain to me why David Wright didn't get a pitch in his ear to lead off the top of the 8th in tonights game?

I have a couple of points.  First off, about why David Wright didn't get a ball to the ear tonight.  I like that the Braves didn't retaliate for 3 reasons.

1. I like David Wright.  He might be on the Mets, but he is a good guy.

2. I don't believe in taking someone out intentionally...even if they started it.

3. The problem with the Mets is they are down, and not motivated.  If we injure their best player, that is only going to upset them, and get them motivated to do something.  Let's let them live in meloncholy for awhile while we run away with the division.

My next point is about the Ryan Church slide.  That was freaking bull crap.  His slide was too late, not even close to the base, and it was obvious what he was doing.  Granted he got jacked up, but it's his own freaking fault.  Serves him right.  Yunel Escobar is at least handling it with respect still.  I really hope the MLB suspends Church when he gets back.  And not only because he is the Mets best player so far this year...but because it's a sign of things to come.  Desperate teams do desperate things.

It's a code that has existed in baseball since before any of us were born. Sometimes you just got to do what you got to do. First Yunel, then Chipper, come on now.

I'll buy into that 100%....but I still wish we would have layed Wright out.

If anyone should get injured, it should be Johan Santana, not David Wright.  JOhan santana is their saving grace...and if he was gone...wow they would suck.

I agree Larry. Maybe the Braves filed it away for use in tommorrows game. To bad I won't be able to watch it if it happens. If Chipper and Yunel both miss the game, SOMEBODY better get drilled.

1) The slide.

  • That has to be the dirtiest slide to date this year.  What was he thinking? if it was a tie game or they were 1 or 2 runs away I would understand.  but by how many points were they losing?  5?  That's totally uncalled for.

2)Hit batsmen.

  • Thus is why I respect this team so much.  We live above 'the codes' and 'the way things are and the way things have been' in major league baseball.  We don't need to beam a guy in retaliation.  If you ask me, the best retaliation came from A-- Mark Teixeira and B-- The Loudest, Longest BOO I have ever heard in my life!  The fans of Atlanta sent a message.  Do. Not. Hit. CHIPPER. JONES!This team and this city really loves that guy and when you brush him back or beam him.  They certainly do not like it and they will let you know about it.

3)Mets' Clubhouse.

  • They have a split clubhouse.  That's plain to see.  Thus is another reason why you have to love the Atlanta Braves.  the last tiff I heard out of the braves' club house was Rafael Furcal's drinking problem, and even then the team huddled around rafae and helped him through it.  You never hear a peep of drama out of the braves' clubhouse.  We can thank Bobby Cox for that.  Braves fans may not always agree with his decisions on the field, but you gotta love the way he runsh is clubhouse.

When it comes down to it.  We don't need to retaliate on dirty plays.  Our respect and class is more retaliation than a beaming of David Wright could ever bring.

the Mets clubhouse lacks veteran leaders. we have smoltz, chipper, glavine,  tex and hudson.

the mets have delgado, beltan, alou, santana and wagner. its hard for delgado to lead because he is playing bad as goes for beltran, alou is hurt too often, santana is the new guy and wagner is a jerk.
