Who do you think should be the Phillies starting catcher? Carlos Ruiz because he is said to be a better defensive catcher than Chris Coste. Or would you go with the over .300 hitter (Coste) over the .230 hitter (Ruiz)? Who's your guy?

I'd platoon 'em.  Lifetime (which is lmuch ess than 3 seasons for both) , Coste has an OPS of 868 vs. lefties and 837 vs. righties.  Ruiz is 746 vs. righties, 630 vs. lefties.  Catcher is arguably the most important (or at least, most specialized) defensive position on the field.  Thus, I'll take Ruiz's D against righties, but no way Coste should be sitting against lefties.

I like Chris Coste.if he can play more behind the plate he can be a good defensive player to. Carlos Ruiz is a good defensive player  but i have to go with Chris Coste.

It's almost a automatic out when Carlos Ruiz steps up to the plate. If I were the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies I would have Chris Coste playing seventy five percent of the games.  I don't see that much of a difference in their defensive. Coste called a nice game last night for Cole Hamels . Go Phillies ! Beat the Mets.

Chris Coste did call a very nice game last night against Atlanta. I think Charlie Manuel likes to keep Coste on the bench so that he will have a good right-handed pinch hitter to use late in the ballgame. But as hot as Coste's bat has been is the very reason he should get the majority of starts at catcher. In this Phillies lineup you can't bat a guy that is hitting over .300 in the 8-hole. He should be in the thick of the lineup protecting one of their sluggers.

What was his book?  33 year old rookie I think?  That would make him around 35 right now.  He's had a great bat the last 3 years for us, but Carlos is our future.  He's younger and he'll be with the team for a long time, whereas Coste probably only has a few more years of MLB left in him.  You don't want to mess up a guys confidence or progress for a guy who will be with you a lot less.  Not trying to burn on Coste but letting Ruiz progress is a lot more important, although I do agree Coste should see more time because when a guy has batted .300+ in his career he deserves a chance to show he can do it consistently.  But it should be split time at best, don't want to screw up Ruiz's progression.  His bat has been pretty bad this year, but he is great defensively and he just needs time.  Vic's and Howard's bats haven't been any better and there are 2 starters who were expected to do something, and they're at the 1 and 4 spots not the 7th or 8th.

ruiz's average is starting to creep up, so i say platoon them...

everyother day off would be good, get some good defense in there, and get coste some good at bats....

Chris Coste is a little older, so i bet giving him half the duty will keep both of them fresh....also, with coste getting more starts, ruiz is looking a little better at the plate as well

coste is a nice pinchitter when he doesnt start too, another plus so he'll still find his way into the game if hes needed

go phils

Right now just platoon them and base your starting catcher on who catches the starter better. You can't cut the the cord on Ruiz now (even though he's struggling at the plate). Coste isn't going to be around forever and you need Ruiz to develop more. He'll be fine later on down the line. I think the catcher position is the least of this team's worries right now. The greater concern is who is throwing to these catchers.
