"Swing coach Butch Harmon fired him, saying Daly was more interested in drinking than golfing."

For future reference -- golf should be used primarily a noun and "golfing" is not a word at all.  EPSN golf writer Bob Harig made this same statement re: the Daly-Harmon situation and ought to know better . . . but what else would one expect from "the world's sports leader?"  ESPN's site is pathetic.

That's O.K. "Golf" is not a sport.

hey toddrow - for future reference, when you correct someone's grammar you should also use proper grammar while doing so.  in your case, that would involve the use of the word "as."

Oh, yes it is.

"Golf" is also a verb. You can say, "I like to golf" and "Do you golf?" So if it's a verb, it can also be a gerund --golfing. Gerunds are nouns used as subjects and objects, even adjectives.        Golfing is fun.    (a gerund used as the subject of the verb)      I like golfing.      (a gerund used as the object of the verb)      He is my golfing buddy.   (a gerund used as an adjective)   Butch Harmon and Bob Harig should stick to golf, not grammar.

Interesting, the Webster's, American Heritage, and Random House dictionaries all say that it is a word. I'll listen to them.

"Google" should also be used primarily as a noun.  But I use "google" as a verb all the time, don't you?  I don't say, "I'm going to go search for a term using the search engine, 'Google."  I say, "I'm going to go 'google' it."  Just like I say, "I'm going golfing."

I hope no one ever takes their sport so seriously and with so little humor that they have regulate the lingual alterations of that sport.  That's just ridiculous.

I'm actually not a fan of the word "golfing" just because of the sound of it, but I don't mind it here because of the parallel construction with "drinking."

Harmon showed his A$$ by shooting off his big mouth. It was fine if he wanted to drop Daly but why make an issue out of it? No doubt Daly has more problems than his golf game but Harmon showed no class at all with his public statement.

I agree that Harmon should have more class, however if you are trying to teach someone and they have no intrest in listening to you and would rather waste their talent it is completely understandable why he would be frustrated and his comments were pretty mild. However it was not necessary to say anything.
