I personally thought that the Falcons should do everything in their power to get Glen Dorsey, including trade up with the Rams to get him if necessary.  Then a funny thing happened.  The Rams took Chris Long and suddenly Dorsey was there for the taking.  I listened to the Falcons' pick on the radio and it was not Dorsey, but Matt Ryan instead.  At first, I was shocked/mad that the Falcons turned down who many thought was the best player in the draft.  Then I realized that Mel Kiper had totally whiffed on Mike Williams, the receiver from USC who now is lucky to be in the league.  Most teams had Ryan as the top quarterback in the draft by a good margin.  Supposedly he did great in all mental tests the Falcons gave him prior to the draft.  I am no thrilled with the Falcons drafting of Ryan for a number of reasons,  First of all, you HAVE to have a good quarterback to do well in the league.  Just ask the Vikings or the Ravens.  Secondly, I remember being ecstatic sitting in a pizza restaurant in school when I saw a flash on the screen on ESPN announcing that the Falcons had traded up to get Vick in the draft.  Boy did Vick totally screw the franchise after being given a million opportunities by Arthur Blank who happens to be one of the most generous and well respected men in America.  Then came an Atlanta Journal article a couple of months ago when Arthur Blank said he has Vick under contract and that he is disappointed but considers Vick to be a son who played video games with Blank's own kids and regularly visited their house.  Call Blank naive, but moving forward the Falcons had no choice other than to snag the top graded QB in the draft to put any hope of Vick playing QB for ATL in the future to bed.  Could you imagine the press and speculation if ATL didn't have a new QB in place at the time when Vick was getting out of prison.  I honestly thought Vick should've played a Reggie Bush role all along and Matt Schaub should've been the QB because Vick was too short to see over the line and was very inaccurate on deep throws.  I am all about second chances and I would possibly consider Vick having a role with the team, just not as the QB.  It is almost a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions for him to fall from Nike wonder boy to an afterthought.  Now he also has to face state charges in Virginia with a trial starting next week.  THANKS FOR PICKING RYAN DMITROFF!  IT HAD TO BE DONE!

Matt Ryan may not be the next Peyton Manning, but he should be a decent quarterback and the Falcons definitely needed a new face after the Vick debacle.  The Falcons receivers should be psyched to have a quarterback who's first instinct is to throw the ball, not pull it in and run.  Ultimately, I don't think the Falcons could take the risk of missing on a potential franchise quarterback by waiting to pick him until the second round.

I agree.  I really liked Dorsey myself, and as much as he may become a force in this league and as much as I know that most games are won in the trenches and all that, but how many times has a DT won superbowl MVP?  I know a strong defense can go a LONG way when you are rebuilding and putting the pieces together, but a serviceable DT can serve a team better than a serviceable QB.

Ryan had to be picked if not who would be the face of the franchise? Michael Turner, Keith Brooking, Roddy White, I think not.

When fans look at a team they see the quarterback first. That is just how it is. He is the biggest name player on the field. That is why they needed a new face for this team. Matt Ryan is a guy who is a good football player but also a guy who won't get into trouble, he is disicplined, hard working, and smart. He will probably win the starting job after camp is over. The offense added a lot of talent this season and could be a suprise team in '08. Sam Baker at left tackle is a huge upgrade over Wayne Gandy last season, resigning Tyson Clabo gives them depth at guard. Justin Blalock is a young guard, Todd McClure, Kynan Forney, and Todd Weiner have all been starters for years now. Blalock and Baker are the only two question marks as to the gelling of the line goes. Michael Turner and Jerious Norwood provides this team with a good runningback rotation and the recievers are pretty good as well with Roddy White, Michael Jenkins, Laurent Robinson, and Brian Finnerman the top four guys. They signed Ben Hartstock to play tight end and he isn't exactly proven but other than that this offense along with Matt Ryan is poised to be one of the best.

Calling the Falcon's offense one that is poised to be among the elite is a little bit of a stretch, at least if you are talking about this year.  The line definately needs to gel, and they probably will as long as they can remain relatively healthy.  The runningback situation is a good one, Turner pounding the inside and Norwood rolling outside and scorching linebackers.  The receivers are definately going to benifit from Ryan and the new offense that is being installed.  There are some young wide receivers that could surprise this year too, Robinson and White in all likelihood will be the end of year starters.  The new offense is run-based and will help Ryan develop quickly but this year is not to going to be a good offensive year because the will be growing pains and it is basically fact that all rookie or first year starters will struggle.  Give it a few years and another playmaker or two then elite will be a more common word, but not just yet.

I disagree.  I thought Dorsey would have been a better pick and we could have gotten a just as quality QB such as Brohm or Henne in the 2nd round.  But we'll see, maybe Ryan we'll be a stud.

Good Luck to Ryan and the Falcons this season. I like the direction the team is headed in right now. Ryan may not have elite skills a yet, but he does have decent poise in the pocket and can hit passes up to 15 yards with very good accuracy. I would rather have that than someone with a big arm or blazing speed. Get the ball into the receivers hands and see if they can do something with it. I'll be rooting for the underdogs like I do most years, and from what I've seen and heard, Blank is a great man, so all I can do is wish him success.

And you are right about having to pick Ryan as it puts a close to the QB situation when Vick gets out. Also, a QB is much more marketable than a DL, and the Falcons are gonna wanna fill some seats with hopeful fans. I do hope they dont rush Ryan in there if he's not ready yet.
