GeauxTigerFan,
College Baseball isn't even on the radar. Don't get me wrong, I love it. But the audience is zilch compared to Football and even Basketball. You don't think the NCAA Regular Basketball Season has been devalued? I simply don't agree.
When Carolina played Duke in their last game prior to the ACC tourney Dickie Vitale and that gang were running their mouths that not even Michigan and OSU could compare to the Carolina and Duke rivalry. Even for Vitale, this was ludicrous. Was it important to Carolina and Duke fans....sure. But overall it had ZERO impact at all. Both teams were going to be no worse than a #3 seed. Hell Duke even lost the first game of their tourney and it still didn't matter. The NCAA regular season is as important as Spring Training is to MLB. You only have to be good enough to get into the playoffs.
Although I am not for it, I concede that maybe 8 team could eventually work. But for me a much bigger issue remains how do fans afford to travel to these games when you start talking 16 or 8 games. It is very easy to say set it up and then we will watch on TV. How do fans travel in those numbers on that many consecutive weekends? If you decide to let certain teams host, how are they going to handle visiting fans with only 6 days notice. Tell me any sport that has 6 days notice to set up a game with 90-100K fans and invites a significant number of visitors The NFL doesnt because there is no such thing as visiting team fans. Ditto for all the Pro Leagues.
Anyway, it all pointless except for the point of arguing. There is not going to be a playoff. That is why I think the Barnhart suggestion is a step in the right direction.
