Especially the crew member. It's not like a 18 wheeler was blocking his view from the track. At some point you have to put this on the shoulders of someone who wasn't paying any attention.

The crew member was in the middle of the pit after all, and should be looking out for things like this.

But on the other side, it is practice.. I don't think she should have been going that fast down pit road, and she did take a pretty drastic change in direction as she tried to pit.

In my eyes, both take the blame for not paying attention.. Practice doesn't always mean you're not at risk. She could have been more careful, and he's really got to keep his head up when out on the track instead of talking to other team's crew members.

Having seen IRL and NASCAR up close, pit row is not the place to be walking outside of the barrier with blinders on.  The majority of the onus is on the pedestrians, not the driver who is arriving at 60 miles per hour & slowing down ASAP to hit the pit mark.   Practice under normal conditions means just that.  High speed, real time pit stops.  Here's hoping the crew member recovers 100%, and learns a valuable lesson to boot.

If you watch the short video of the accident, one can see that Patrick's view is blocked by the 300 lb. crew member in the north pit. Buckman is walking in the middle of the pit where he should not be.  It is unfortunate.

Watch the video from ESPN. She cut into the pit box BEFORE hers, nearly taking the wing off the car sitting in it's pit, and she was going way too fast for non race practice conditions. You can't even see the line for her pit box in the tape. Cutting a box like that is not even allowed during a race. This was not a race conditions practice stop or else people would not be allowed to walk around without protection. I've been driving race cars for 22 years (SCCA and ALMS) and to be within 10 feet of someone during a practice session is just plain dumb. There are always people around during a practice and the driver, as we are told in the meetings, has to be aware of where their car is at all times. If this had been an unknown driver instead of the most popular driver in IRL, they would have been raked over the coals by the IRL. Nice spin by them to make this not her fault.
