I have seen this elsewhere, but in everyones opinion, would a playoff take away from the significance of the regular season? (Kind of like in Basketball where many people watch the Tip-Off classic games but without the intensity of say a regular season game between Ohio State and Texas from a few years back, because everyone knows that the team will make it to the tournament).
In my mind, if we had a 4 or 8 team playoff at the end of the year to determine the Champ, it would not take away from the intensity of regular season match ups. Teams still want to win their respective conferences, and would be worried about seeding. Although I do see the other side of debate and understand where that side is coming from, I still think the college football season would still be every bit as exciting as it is now.
What does everyone else think?

Thats why I think it would be important to just have a 4 team playoff (plus one model) than an 8 team... Because then all you really have to do is win your conference and you are in. SO this may create bigger OOC games which would make it exciting but the games wouldnt have that big of an impact so wouldnt be as important. With the 4 team playoff you still likely cant lose more than once and make it in. Just my opinion

My preference is 4 teams. A gun to my head would convince me that 8 might work. More than that is a joke. Might as well be the NBA and/or NHL. I used to love College Basketball season. Now, it means zilch except for a couple of buble teams that have almost no chance to win it anyway.
My biggest concern with 8 or more is the logistics and how fans will be able to afford it. And I am really opposed to using home fields. No major sport in the world schedules a game on 6 day notice for 100K fans except for Pro Leagues that provide no tickets for the visitors. We do not need this crap in CFB.

I favor the plus one system which thwarts incidences like 2004 from happening (an undefeated BCS champ not getting a chance). I am not in favor of a 5 team playoff or more. I know I'm in the minority in thinking this but yes I do believe it'll take away from the regular season. CFB is unique in that every single game matters. You take that away, WVU would have had a chance to still come back after losing to Pitt, USC would have had a chance to still come back after losing to Stanford, etc etc. I want those upsets to be huge. I want teams to be rewarded for bringing it each week. I don't want teams resting their starters knowing they've got a playoff spot locked up. Those are my two cents.

I would like a 6 team playoff. Seeded as you would with a 4 team, but the top 2 seeds have a bye for the first game. I believe this would put even more emphesis on the regular season. A team like WVU, or USC who, more times than not, recently have had little competition for their conference would still have that fight to gain the #1 or 2 seed and get that bye. Also, games should be scheduled in neutral fields.
For Example:
Big 10 vs Big East Champs play in Dallas, TX
winner vs ACC in Phoenix
SEC vs Pac 10 in Dallas
winner vs Big 12 in Minnesota

I love the plus 1 format but I have also seen elsewhere that kind of acts like a punishment for finishing 1 or 2 (where you have to play an extra game, instead of just one in the Championship).
If it is a four team tournament, then you have the likelihood that no small school will get in (which I am not saying is a bad thing, just a possibility). Also, on any given season, the 6 BCS conferences may each have a 1 loss champion--who is in and who is out? (I know this is rather unlikely, but it could happen)
This is a very difficult topic and I too share the worry that the regular season may not have as much pizazz. It is just such a shame when an undefeated team (i.e. Auburn a few years back) did not get a chance to prove it on the field that they were the best.
Nevertheless, it is a fun topic to debate, just like conference re-alignment.

This is just my opinion. You play in a BCS conference, you go undefeated, you should get a shot. You play in a BCS conference, you lose a game, your at the mercy of the voters and I don't feel sorry for you. I didn't feel sorry for UGA or USC in 2007 (they lost to teams they shouldn't have), I didn't feel sorry for USC in 2004 (don't lose to Cal then cry about not getting your fair shot), I didn't feel sorry for OSU in 2005 or 2003 (don't lose to Texas, PSU, etc.). The only team I ever felt sorry for was Auburn. They were undefeated in a BCS conference and should have been able to play for it.

I never thought of it like this - great post. You know what would be great, if you can have a flexible approach (which will never happen). If needed(an undefeated BCS team is left out), you have a plus one. If there is only 2 or less undefeated teams, no need for a plus one.
Anyhow, those are my thoughts.

They can just stay home where they belong, once in a while get in Holiday or Sun Bowl.
I do not like 6 teams. Having a bye is just too unfair an advantage.
