A lot of fans think the 2 OT playoff game in Miami to beat the Dolphins was the best ever...It was a great game.

The next season the Chargers played the defending SB 49ers in the reg season. THAT was the most entertaining game. Dan Fouts & co against Joe Montana in what should have been the Superbowl the prior Jan.

I'm hoping by using the dashes CBS doesn't scramble all of this

Thanks to Todd Tobias from the book Bombs Away

Yeah that game sounds pretty entertaining but I dont believe I was alive quite yet born in '86.... But a pretty entertaining game recently in Chargers history was by far the game against the Bengals 2 years ago.... it was just a ridiculous game and a lot of fun to watch

My personal favorite is when The Burner took off around the corner to seal the deal and destroy Manning and the Colts hope of a undifeated season. I remember it like yesterday. Me and my cousins almost destroyed my living room when it happened!!LOL!!   GET'EM BOLTZZZ

What you hafta remember is in those days Fouts vs Montana was like Peyton Manning vs Tom Brady today.

I don't think the Colts and Patriots have ever played such a high scoring close game...

Truly amazing game to watch. I remember thinking whoever has the ball last is going to win. Each team only punted once. Neither defense (and they were both decent) could stop the other teams high powered offense.

Go Chargers

It's gotta be watching the Bolts squeek out the win over the Steelers in the AFC championship game back in '95 (1994 season). I can still see Neil O'Donnell's pass being batted down at the goalline and the look on the Pittsburgh fans faces. Priceless. Kinda like the look on our faces 2 weeks later, but for those 2 weeks, it was great to be a Chargers fan!

Yep those 2 weeks were the best. Even tho deep in my heart I knew it would take a miracle of monumental proportions for my Chargers to beat the 49ers. They had talent like our Chargers have now...amazing

Dan Fouts and his cronies would be considered to be one of the best eras if they had made the SB after the 79 season and the 80 and 81 seasons. They should have / could have been the only team to win 3 straight superbowls. They were that good. Flukie stuff happens.

Go Chargers

Having a defense that can't hold the other team under 30 points a game is not a fluke. As good as the Chargers offense was back then, the defense was equally as bad. They had a few good players on D, but as a unit, they were a joke.

The defense was in fact on the down swing by the 82 season. But they had lost Gary "Big Hands" Johnson and Louie Kelcher to the 49ers. Gene Klien was a cheap muthah.

The thing was that the offense scored so fast (5-6 plays) the defensive players didn't get enough time to rest before they had to go out and do it again. Kinda like when an offense goes 3 and out...too much of that and your D is suckin air...

Go Chargers

Actually if you know your Chargers history, it was not that Klien was cheap.  It was that he was planning on selling the Chargers and knew the offense was the selling point.  He preserved the Offense and let the defense go.  And then Spanos bought the team.

One thing you could say about the no defense years .. the games always seemed to come down to who had the ball last!

Actually I DO know my Chargers history...

Gene Klien was not only cheap he was VINDICTIVE...

Ask John Jefferson...J.J. was the most spectacular, circus-catch making receiver in Chargers history. Even more so than Lance Alworth. After the '80 season J.J. wanted more money. By todays standards probably not much. Gene Klien refused to even talk about re-negotiating his contract. After a few weeks of reading JJ's pleas in the media Klien up and traded him to the Packers (at the time the dreggs of the NFL) And certainly in a climate where JJ would have a hard time performing his craft. In an interview I saw about 10 years ago JJ reminisced that his worst move ever was digging his heel in up against one Mr.Gene Klien.

It worked out ok for us fans. The Chargers somehow got Wes Chandler to replace JJ. (I think from the Saints) Wes was a really good replacement, but he certainly wasn't JJ...

Go Bolts

Beat Raiders Broncos Chiefs Patriots Colts Jaguars Steelers Giants Cowboys Packers 49ers Redskins Rams Seahawks Cardinals

PS Klien didn't sell the team till '86. 81-82 would have been too early to let the defense (that led the league in sacks from 79-82) evaporate if you still wanted to sell 4 years later?

Whatever I don't happen to know about my Chargers, I have books on their history as well as Chargers.com. Not to mention being a fan since 12 yrs old in 1960...Friendly Suggestion...Don't ever insinuate that I don't know my Chargers history.

I officially declare Boltnut our site historian... thanks for the walk down memory lane.  Louie Keltcher, Fred Dean, and Gary "Big Hands" Johnson really got to the QB.  Woodrowe Lowe and Willie Buchanon were solid also.

You're on!  Another poster who's in hiatus "balboa bolt' He knows his history too.

As old as I am, I've probably forgotten more Chargers history than most of the younger posters on these threads actually have in their memory banks.

Mostly the bad years forgotten, the good years seem like yesterday.
