Barry Zito was not a great pitcher.  He had one great year and won the Cy Young but after that he was not a great pitcher.  Why any team would pay 14.5 million for Barry Zito is a mystery to me.  Pitchers for the most part can come and go, very few can post great numbers year after year, and Barry Zito was not one of them.  As an A's fan I am glad that Mr. Beane does not over pay for pitching, and he seems to unload pitchers just at the right time.  The only major pitcher in the last few years that has gone on to have success is Tim Hudson.  Dan Haren is doing well in Arizona but Mr. Beane got a lot of good talent for him.  I wish Barry Zito well, but the Giants have made a major mistake that will cost them for many years to come.

What trade?  Zito signed as a free agent.

Zito wasn't traded, and the A's actually offered him a contract, granted not for that much, if I recall correctly.  As far as the Hudson, Moulder and Haren trades, it is way too early to judge the Haren trade, but the other trades worked out great so far.  As far as the Haren trade goes, I am pretty consifent it will help both teams.  Haren will be a stud for a while, but the Diamondbacks have the BEST farm system BAR NONE so they could afford to give those players up.

Zito was a very good #3 pitcher behind Hudson & Mulder.  When elevated to ace status he did not cut it.  He doesn't have #1 stuff and he is trying to throw #1 pitches just because SF was stupid enough to give him #1 money.  The dumbest thing they did was pitch him opening day.
